Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    d. No, the firmware install will format the drive appropriately
    e. If you go into the 'hidden' menu (by holding down the setup button for 30 seconds) what does it show for HDD status? You may be able to resolve the issues by simply upgrading firmware (which will reformat the HDD) and reinstalling maps.
Thankyou Sir! I'll check the HDD status shortly.... Good to know the firmware may sort it out - could try that this weekend, will report back soon

It'll probably be a few weeks before SSD arrives as it's en route from China - firmware this weekend would give me a chance to check out the update and have a play with it before taking the thing to bits.

    • HDD STATUS:

      temp/power status: DEGRADED
      volume size : 0

      HDD failure I'm thinking.......

      • Ignore the temp status. That's normal.
Size of 0 is problematic however.
        What about the other fields?

            • The new SSD is coming anyway and should sort it out as long as it's not something like a power control issue to the HDD or a cooling fan problem....

                Good news kamold,

The new SSD turned up a few weeks ago and I had some time to burn this weekend....
                • Burned new 5238 firmware to DVD last week (couldn't check it burned properly without a unit to install it on)
                • Pulled the 510 this morning and brought it upstairs
                • Took it to bits, installed new SSD
                • Back downstairs and connected it back into the car
                • DVD with firmware inserted - worked first time!!!
                • DVD with maps inserted - worked first time!!!
                • Checked secret menu - 3 partitions running Vienna FFS
                • Checked SSD - capacity 53.25GB

Thankyou so much for your help kamold!!! It was an anxious hour when firmware was loading (especially with the SSD variable) but worth it in the end! Had to redo the radio station presets but had a big smile on my face whilst doing so

Now, next question How long until the maps start showing up on screen with the new firmware and v8 maps install???

I've left it running outside and it's reported it was able to get a FIX in 2D mode with 3 of 9 satellites after about 5 mins.... no maps displayed on screen though

                • Maps only take 10-15mins to install

                  • All good now

The maps installed fine.... it was a 20 minute drive to get the GPS calibrated though!

It's never taken that long before but saying that the head unit hasn't been stripped down to it's Charlies before either

Now the search begins for my old POI DB that had all my customizations on it.............

                    • Have seen up to 50mins for units to realise they are not in regesburg Germany. 20mins is probably average. But it will know where it is from now on

                      • What Kamold said.

But it usually helps the unit if you actually take it for a drive. There could be interference/poor signal etc where the car is parked, as you wait for the GPS to get's it's act together.

Every time I read one of these posts I feel the urge to upgrade my own... then I read up about it again and get reminded that it seems to make SFA difference to boot times or normal operation. I have music on an SD card, although mostly just stream from my phone making it all sort of pointless untill the drive itself dies.

Still, very nice work pulling it all apart and getting it back together

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

Thanks, that's the only reason I got new HDD ~ the original $hat itself and committed suicide..... It's good to be able to view maps from the unit now without having to load them from the DVD player and listen to the constant spinning and whirring and spinning loading up map data in the background

                            • And the DVD had to be so very very slow too.

Out of interest how old was the old one?

                              • Sooo terribly slow via dvd and noisy.... Easy enough to put up with though as I was just happy that it all still worked even though HDD had failed. No music on HDD and no POI tipped me over the edge along with the fact PATA SSD won't be around for ever. I was also worried the DVD would die too with all the extra use it was getting!

The unit has been in the Tig for 5 years now and it was a revision C I bought from eBay..... could have been 6 or 7 years old maybe? There's no obvious dates on the old HDD but I'll check later and see if there's a way of getting the date from one of the numerous serial numbers on the label.
