Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Washed my car (again) to get rid of the shiraz smell after the Saturday communal grape pressing session (9N3 Polos + Suzuki Swifts + MX-5).

Nearly killed myself (+1 Range Rover) on Sat cruise as I found out the lack of top end for diesels, even tuned. + averaged 4.7l / 100km (indicated) on the fairly aggressive cruise

That is one well sorted car. Bargain for the price.

I got new (darker) tint put in my car today. Found some little scratches ok the passenger side window that I don't remember seeing before with the lighter tint.

The tint place reckons it wasn't them as they don't touch the outiside, but they use tools on the outside right?

Scratches may very well have been there before but I'm pretty anal with my car and I'm sure I would've noticed them before.

        Not happy Jan.

Nah mate, there's no reason for them to touch the outside of the glass to apply tint, unless they had tools in their hand and wacked it accidentally... but that's not a reasonably conclusion.

          • I figure its just that the darker tint has brought to my attention some light scratches that may have been there before from dirt stuck in the rubber seal or something. Will still call the place up and try to get an admission of guilt.

Anyone know how to get light scratches out?

Whilst boost is an important aspect of our cars, its not everything... The difference from 17-21 psi may only be a few KW, but I prefer to look at the Torque curve than anything else...

Seems pretty obvisous by now that Giac'd Polo's are pulling slightly better numbers than APR's...

Thunder, you are likely getting more peak PSI, when I was using an MBC I found that boost came on quick, torque was hard, but it also died lower in the rev range. Ultimartely, if you are getting more peak torque but the rest of the curve is suffering, you are prefering peak torque and more noise over a more consistant curve.

when I was logging a lot, I found the best results came from timing and bypassing the N249, the MBC didn't do it for me. Nor did the J vesion of the N75. As Fuzion has said, what works for one tune or vehcile may not work the same on the next.

If you are chasing the last few KW with the existing tune you can also try:
                        - changing the intake (eg POD)
                        - removing grills on the MAF
                        - phelonic spacer (more about heat)
                        - porting / polishing the exhaust manifold
                        - better flowing intake mani
                        - decat / gutted cat / sports cat
                        - cams / block work
                        - injectors / fuel reg / fuel pump
                        - full exhaust
                        - cranking the turbo waste gate
                        - intercooer
                        - Tip / boost piping flow

At the end of the day, it would seem the stock turbo and tune make the biggest impact. K03 can do good things, but a hybrid turbo and good tune is a different ballgame without going to a garrett and a bunch of custom work.

I wouldnt particularly agree, but each have their own theory.

                        • After 3 week, 4 new tyres, 3 replaced windscreens, failed attempt at replacing my springs and consequently ending up having to pay to get it done (yes I know I suck), today I finally got the defect notice off my car.... do you think the vic roads guy even came out to look at the car?!... no.

So spent quit a lot of money I didn't have to pretty much put my car to stock (minus window tint and APR) for nothing, could of got a dodgy roadworthy for a 5th of the price and cake walked if they knew weren't going to look the car over!

And before anyone gets into it.. I know, I made the choice to do mods that weren't 100% legal shouldn't bitch when I get busted and I normally wouldn't but the timing was ****... bah I know I deserved it.

Just wheel poke, didn't want to risk not passing roadworthy with the 17s so went back to the original 16s which all needed new tyre.
They didn't see the chip in the windscreen but I knew the roadworthy mechanic would, 3 windscreen cos O'brians surprisingly don't know how to fit windscreens without ****ing up.
First was fitted all to one side, so like a 2cm gap on one side and none on the other, next they installed a non genuine screen to fix the first **** up, I ordered a genuine screen

And yeah lowering springs where the roadworthy mechanic's call thought it would pass but didn't was like 1cm too short at the centre of the car.
Wouldn’t bother me so much if I managed to change them out myself but I’m retarded and couldn’t get the front struts to budge.
