Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Over the last several days I have removed the secondary air system and add the resistors and added a 3" turbo back exhaust with a 100 cell high flow cat, WOW what a difference, peaked boost back to good numbers 19s/21s psi., cant wait to run it on the dyno, should be big numbers. Oh have I said how much I love my car.

    Cheers

    • Well done mate.

Did you use the Forge blanking plates or just block off the hoses?

Are you getting dash warning lights from the secondary air system not being there? I understand you have used resistors to make the car think the hardware is there, just wondering what happens when the return air is not available? I'd think the A/F's are way out of whack for the first minute...

      • Hello noone,

Yes used the forge plate, and I had a code appear after the new exhaust first start. Cleared code and it hasn't appeared since (approx 200km)

The only thing that seems different is more vapor/moisture at start-up out the exhaust.

Try to get to the dyno over the next couple weeks then Ill know more on the a/f's

        • Interesting, think I'll have to get rid of the secondary air system, I don't like all that stuff hanging off the air system, potentially causing a weak point on the engine...

          • Edit: never mind.

                    • Honeycomb Grills

Landed some honeycomb fog grills from VAG link on special - Welcome to VAGLINK online store

All up came to about $100 (incl. postage). I decided to get the basic ones and take some advice from some of the other members and cut out the holes for SMIC air intake with the dremel. Then grafted the intake/funnel to the grill, which was a bit of messin about but it came out alright in the end. Pretty happy with the look!

Looks kinda ricey in the pic, but much better in real life. Next, the centre console and air vents, if I can figure out how to pull them out without breaking anything.

                        Looks awesome!

Where did you buy the vinyl from?

                        • That's brilliant. What did you use to open the holes up? Dremel?? Was it quite messy to get the duct and things fitted?

                            • Well there was a bit of improvisation I used a standard drill with a wider drill bit to put 4 or 5 small holes into each honeycomb shape, then got the dremel in there to clean it up into 1 honeycomb shape (if that makes sense). Then used a bit of sandpaper to clean it up, took a little while but still better than paying $200+ for the proper ones.

With fitting the duct, I used araldite and left it overnight, then some black 3M tape to bind the two together and seal up any air gaps between the two pieces. There wasn't too much mucking about and they all fitted back in to the bumper pretty well. Also, surprisingly didn't have a whole of trouble getting the old lower grills out either.

It's worth it in the end if you're considering it, as I know it's something I've put off doing for well over a year.
