Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled
After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.
Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before.
We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Gave the car a drink of Castrol Edge 5w30, as it was near impossible to to source the "dealer only" Castrol SLX professional III or Mobil 1 ESP. Did track down ESP, but only available in 20L cans @ $380, gave it a miss.

Installed the Verdict bushes. Definately a change in the feel, a little more precise. Its good to get under the hood again.
Whilst I was there, I did a few little things, tightened the clamp on the TIP, removed the grid on the back of the MAF and cleaned out the air filter. I'm not sure which one of these made the difference, but the little girl has a little more torque down low and seems to come on boost after a gear change a little more seamlessly. Could just be that I cleaned some junk out of the MAF when I was removing the rear grill...

If you pull out your maf, there are 3 grills. 2 before the sensor, 1 after.
The point of the grills as I understand is to keep a consistent flow of air past the sensor, so it is not affected by turbulance.
When tests are done on the 1.8T's, the restriction shows up in a number of areas. The MAF itself is one of these restrictions, but you don't want it working poorly, so its not recomended to remove all the grills.
I removed the rear grid as I don't see it changing the airflow as its post the sensor and is no doubt adding a small amount of restriction to the airflow. Not much to it, used some wire snips around the edge of the grill to snap it off, it is designed to unclip, but would not come out for me.

Actually - air tends to flow and twist between points. If you want air to flow smoothly over a particular point, you need something before AND after it to ensure smooth flow.
I've no idea about the MAF or these grills (never looked, nor would I have the equipment to test etc), but the grill afterwards could be as important as the grills before...

I don't think the flow is even past the sensor anyway, thats why there are lots of other sensors, so they can all work togeather.
I don't know what effect it will have, thats why i'm testing it. Will do some logs of the MAF flow at some stage to see if I can see any irregularities.

Instead, the answer is much simpler... they are there as a final safety barrier to prevent damage to the MAF.Previous Rides: Polo GTI, Mx5 10AE, MY05 WRX WRP10, Renault Sport Clio 172
Current Ride: Evo 8 MR, Fabia MK3

There is no point to having them for protection, its straight after the air filter, if it got through there, you've got issues.
I have read people wanting to remove the grills but deciding against it due to the possible MAF readings from the Turbulance. If ou read one of the early threads on the Seat intake, someone had looked at all the restrictions, the MAF was one of the big ones.
