Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Installed insulation in the rear to try and cut down the road noise.
I ordered 5mm stick on, turned out to be about 3mm, installed anyway.
I ordered 1.5 square meters, wasn't enough, needed about 3.5.
Still need to do the doors, spare wheel well and firewall.
It is quiter now, not a huge amount, I will order the 10mm stuff next time.

      • Any tips on sourcing a new N75 boost controller?

Will try the dealers, but open to alternatives pending pricing. Couldn't find anything that reasured me that I was looking at the right stuff on ebay or through google searching.

        • just be sure you match the last digit/suffix of the part# of your N75 to the one you buy..... This is where you can get caught. For example an "H" (which is what ECS tuning sells as the 'race N75') or "J" will cause boost spike/higher boost max than what you've got if what you have is a stock N75. A stock 1.8T BJX N75 is the same as a "c", "f" or an "e" with each subsequent one superceding the last. Mine didn't have a suffix.... It just says Eaton 058 906 283 without the letter so yours may be the same? BTW 058 prefix is VW and 034 is audi. Mines an Eaton but some are bosch I think....

              • Thanks for the all the info Sam, and cheers for the offer Gav. I spoke with VW spare parts yesterday, I'll find out what part number they are recommending. I haven't ordered it yet, was $126 through them.

I'm seeing the error when scanning it, N75 staying open or something to that effect. It's painfully slow to drive with so little boost. I could try swapping them between cars to validate... Will see if that's possible.

Definitely swap between cars Sean. Be a 10 minute job with the engines cold and would prove the problem straight away. The wiring is a known drama on all N75s. The N75 is set to fail open which is why the boost drops to actuator pressure.

                  • Do a visual check on the wiring and VAC lines around the N75.

The run around $80 on ebay when I last looked.

                    • Got some Nolathane LCA bushes fitted. I know everyone says it but "Holy crap what a difference they make!"

Gone is that weird squidgy feeling .... Polo's front end is almost as pointy as the family station wagon now... (Almost)

                        • Its a nice change hey. I found that axle tramp was reduced and traction under power alot better. Now put some street semi's on the front. R1R and AD08R's fit the stock rim and the steering starts to actually give feedback.

                            • I've got KU39's on the fronts. They still light up in 1st, but definitely less axle tramp.

Trying to decide whether I need shocks and springs or whether this is enough.

Need intercooler too. Had a few hot days which just kill power....

                              • Made two good fog lights out of four average ones. Had a fiddle with the car whilst in the garage.

Anyone else noticed a reasonable clunk from the steering rack if you wobble the steering wheel whilst at full lock? I can feel the rack moving!
