Lucas, I agree with your observation but if you follow any VAG turbo car, they all puff black smoke under decent throttle application. The GTI motor runs pretty rich down low but dangerously leans out in the top of the rev range so it's no surprise you're only seeing it puffing as the car takes off. Personally, I'd be very wary of running this motor to redline often without a tune. As usual though, VAG would rather keep replacing engines and components under warranty rather than admit they stuffed up.
