Soot doesn't mean oil consumption though, it's just particle matter from combustion, direct injection engines naturally produce more carbon build up due to the fuel delivery. If it's oily sludge then you might have a case...sigpic

I would still like to know why direct injection engines create more soot than MP EFI but that statement instils more confidence in my car.
I noticed that I have soot on the back I my car (a very small amount, pretty much unnoticeable compared to others) but I was wondering what would be causing it. I don't have oil consumption issues (haha go the 1.2T) but I do have soot - I just thought it was running too rich or it was burning incorrectly
In warmer weather (above 30deg) the idle does go up by about 200 rpm and it's more prone to sooting up but i ruled this down to it trying to prevent pre detonation by running rich.
After the most recent cruise up the reefton (bellow 10deg) the entire exhaust was pitch black - no joke you couldn't see a single bit of silver and I was concerned to say the least. The thing is it's not oily - just black carbon powder.

Had a crank case hose and another hose changes last week. Checked the oil at first fuel fill yesterday, anx it is down to 1/3.
Of course, did I think to check how full it was upon receiving the car back? Of course not!
Sigh. Will keep monitoring...

got a call from VW saying they wont be doing an engine rebuild but instead changing my breather hose again.. they said this is a new one compared the previous breather hose change? A load of bull or does it really exist ? Also would an engine rebuild really solve the problem or is there a glimmer of hope for breather hose change in terms of oil consumption ??

I thought the next step would be an engine rebuild, since I already had a hose change, but apparently not...
I quote:
"Checked ELSA for next stage of consumption test as per TPI.
Requires crank case ventilation hose and air intake hose.
Have ordered parts and will fit when both clutch and mechatronics are replaced"
Has anybody else had to go through this step?
I don't remember seeing anybody getting these done... Am I wrong?Originally posted by k0e1 View Postgot a call from VW saying they wont be doing an engine rebuild but instead changing my breather hose again.. they said this is a new one compared the previous breather hose change? I hadn't heard of it before either...
Been done on my car, so far not impressed!

634km into my latest consumption test the light's come on again... need to sort out a time to pop in. Again.
Seems to have gone from bad to worse from time to time as well, quite hard to tell what the next "step" these folks down at the dealership will do...
Sigh

So the car's back into the dealership for an "assessment" and was told they would need to car in for at least an hour. Fair enough, since they picked up the car from home and I didn't need to waste work hours driving in and out.
Then a call came in the afternoon couple hours before I head off from work and into the dealership to pick up my car... was told they've contacted with VWG are still waiting for the folks there to correspond SO they need to keep the car overnight........ so without the need to start an argument, I said fine so in return they dropped a loan car off at my workplace.
I'm heading back in this evening to collect the car and was sent an email saying they will "get (me) up to speed with things when you pop in".
... And to count the total amount of days my car was taken from me because of this is just... wow. I'm sure when the oil check light comes on before that 1000km is due for a number of times already warrants something right?!
Rage.

Had the breather hose and intake pipe replaced as per TPI, noticed that the breather hose was made literally last month 5th Nov 2013.
Was told to drive as per normal and if oil light comes on again before the next 1000km, they're going to assess further. As funny as it sounded, I told my service advisor, "see you in a bit" as I was leaving... and he expects me to pop in again in a couple weeks' time (as if he knows the light will come on again) :|
