Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Well to be honest, the 1.4TSI in the GTI is a hit-and-miss thing... some people got it lucky and had no issues at all and some people (like me and some of us here) has had everything from breather fixes, rebuilds and full engine replacements done...

I walked into the GTI ownership taking a risk knowing that there is the oil consumption issue and even though it's been fun driving a pocket rocket around some of the time it's been this -->

Despite the circumstantial evidence of a common trend on this forum....you need to absorb it all with a grain of salt and remember there is always good and bad stories to be told with anything car related.

People with bad experiences, people hearing others' bad experiences or people merely playing informant (you know who you are) will understandably be the first to start a slag fest. For me, I'm satisfied with my GTI and in general have had a hassle free journey across 3 years of ownership.

I say go with your gut feeling.

      • The Polo GTI is great and a new one will probably have a reliable engine. The problem is that the Fiesta ST is one of the best hot hatches out there according to a lot of publications, and the current GTI can't really compete with that.

        • Nearly a month after I received my rebuilt engine from VW I can say it was an absolute fail. Engine oil light came on after 3k. that was with 1k worth of manual driving and running it in. And like other forum member suggests manual driving will reduce your engine oil consumption. So I have taken it back to VW to start an oil consumption and will update you guys on the test and whatever bulls**t excuse they are going to suggest after. I will be taking this issue up with VWA directly after this oil consumption and suggest a buy back offer.

That sucks. It really shows the pot luck in these things. My new base engine has luckily not used oil like it's predecessor.
Definitely get onto VWA sooner rather than later. Good luck with it all.

            • I've done 1100kms and my GTI appears to have used no oil at all. Have been driving in manual mode and not babying it.

                The understatement of the decade!

When I bought my 6R GTI I did my research and knew of the oil consumption issues, but after 15 months of ownership it became too much for me and I sold it.

                • So... My car has done 13400ks so far. Topped up engine oil @12800ks which was only about 100mls. Had to add 350mls again yesterday. Am abit worried now.

                  • I wonder if cold weather could have something to do with it.

Mine of recent has started to chew oil...again. From Dec 15th / 13 to the end of March / 14 it didn't use a drop of oil (11,000km) since then (now 5 weeks) it has dropped about 5mm (500ml?) from the top of the "A" section to the top of the "B" section.

Only thing that has changed is weather. Could also be that old oil burns better? I'm not sure but it's got me stumped.

                    Oh and it's a 77tsi...

                        • Checked the missus car yesterday, two mm of oil on the stick appeared on the indicators.
Its done 4k since the service but some dip**** overfilled as it was way off the stick regardless of the temp i checked it at

Wonder why the dealerships have a habit of overfilling the oil?......must be to try and get less complaints of excess oil consumption?
They have overfilled my oil by at least 300-400 ml at each of my 2 services, I keep complaining about it at each service and it falls of deaf ears. I have immediately siphoned it out to the proper level myself once home. Next service is in ~ 3K , I am going to get the service manager to check the oil level with me post service!!

                            • Having the first service today and getting the oil replaced with penrite 5w40, my oil consumption isn't absurdly high but it will be interesting to see if the new oil reduces it.

                              • Our MY12.5 GTI has been using 300-500ml of oil every 2000km's since new. Not as bad as some but not ideal either.

However for the past few months, thanks to advice from this forum, we have driven in manual mode only.
I can confirm that our oil consumption is now zero, or near enough to. I haven't seen the oil level drop at all.
