Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Hmm I've been driving exclusively in manual for a while too (haven't been looking at the oil though), more to save the clutches but I'll keep an eye on it now that the car has been re-filled with fresh oil.

Side note very happy with the service and price of Exoticars in Parramatta, will definitely use them again.

Can you have the up arrow on a gti? Ive only ever seen it in a 77tsi loan car I had once.

I think the key reason to change manually is to get the engine to rev a little more rather than shift for economy as the program or shift guides do.

Weird. I thought the gear shift arrow would only be of use in a manual.

I understand what you mean, just thought it'd be unnecessary with a DSG. It's probably some silly thing to comply with Euro V emissions standards or something.

Penrite don't have a 5w40 oil that is approved for use in this engine mate. I'm assuming that you already know this seeing as you have picked a non-approved oil, but you better hope you don't need any oil-related engine work done.....

It's not just the viscosity of the 5w30 approved oils, it's the detergent and particle suspension properties as well that lead to oil companies developing specific compounds for their 504/507 approved oils.

Yes a higher weight oil might lead to less oil consumption but that is doing is masking the true problem of poor engine manufacturing and software programming.

                  • Penrite's 5w40 is VW 502/505 approved, which is fine for the polo engine when on fixed time/distance service schedule...

                        • Can you believe it... Just ticked over 4,000km in the Golf and so far no need to top up! I would have topped up 3-4 times already in my old Polo O_o

                            • Took the oil burner to different dealership for top up, definately wont be going to GC anymore.

Gonna ringup VAG hotline and leave some positive feedback for this new place of business.

                              • I don't want to jinx myself but looks like the worst of my oil consumption has been fixed. I've waited a while before I say this to make sure. I was using approx. 600-700 mls per 1,000 KM so when it went in for it's first service back in September I informed the dealership. They did the oil breather TPI and said that may resolve it but I didn't have much faith based on other people's feedback on here. Turns out it has (unless they did something else they didn't tell me about). It's been 8 months and just over 10,000 KM since and I only just did my first top up as the oil had reached down to C on the dipstick. Let's hope it stays this way.
