Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Polo GTI High Oil Usage - Discussion Thread

Was speaking to a mate last night who got one of the first Polo GTI's in the country in early January. He absolutely loves it but the check oil light has come on every 1500 to 2000km so far with it using a bit of oil.

    Is this common place?

VWA told him it is common for the first year.

I have no idea. Never owned a NEW car.

Yes, there is another thread in this section documenting the oil usage in the 1.4 twin charged engine. Nothing new really regarding vw performance engines.

7500km is pretty good to me. My check oil has come on 3 times in less than 4000 km's. I have added 1 litre on three occassions so far and my dealer now has it under supervision having added another 300ml on Thursday. There are no oil leaks so the oil is definitely getting burned.

Four and half months in (got mine in early December ) with 4,500kms on the odo and my check oil light hasn't come on once.

I topped up with maybe 500mls a few weeks ago.

Got my 5 door in December, a couple of months in with roughly 2000kms driven the oil was on the other side of low, so topped up with 750mls and been purring ever since. Check the oil every few weeks to keep an eye on things. Love my ride!

              Polo GTI High Oil Usage

Hi, I agree with the high oil usage in the new Polo GTI.

A number of owners on our thread about the car have commented on it also: EXCLUSIVE: Is this the first customer new Polo GTI in the UK? | PoloDriver

You should be checking the oil yourself more often before it gets low enough for the light to come on

Guys i have done about 2500km now and just checked my oil this moment and it has hardly moved/consumed any oil from day one with 50km's on it.
I don't know how you guys have been running your engines in but this is how i went about running my engine in and i'd highly recommend it to any new car owner:
In fact at 1600 km's i took it to the melbourne dyno day and it made 112kw at the wheels, so no babying run in with this one. in fact i feel as though its making more power in the upper reaches now, and has not chewed through the oil.

When I picked up our 77TSI just recently, the sales person mentioned about the oil consumption and that I shouldn't be alarmed if the oil light comes on. He mentioned that if it does come on to go to them and they will top it up for free. He said that I MUST use their oil.

I asked if it was running-in oil but he didn't really know. He said that I should let them know if I'm going on a long trip and he will sort out a 1l bottle (maybe they should supply a 4l container when purchasing a new car, now that'd be a novel idea).

No such thing as running in oil these days and he told you (another) dealer lie, you can use any oil you like, SO LONG AS IT MEETS THE VW APPROVED OIL SPECIFICATION which is in your owners manual.

For a petrol engine, you can use any oil that is approved to either VW502.00 or VW504.00 spec.

Castrol Edge Sport5w-30 is 502.00 & readily available.

Shell Helix Ultra Extra 5w-30 is 504.00 & readily available.

                            It's all in your manual.

If your in the middle of nowhere & the light comes on (I can't believe people can't be bothered to check the dipstick for the first few months on a new car) then any 5w-30 synthetic is better than driving around with low oil.

If you want to buy the correct oil (Mobil1 5w-30ESP IIRC) in handy sized 1 quart top-up bottles, try gllubricants.com

And I agree with Gambit. I didn't thrash my car but drove it with "spirit" and it has never required a top-up between 15,000km services.
