  • Yes, sorry, it must be a language barrier

I do not see in that thread you posted the link to what is actually different. Here is a pic of my engine bay, cover removed:

This is from your forum (albeit slightly cleaner! )

    • Yes, there are no visible differences...
The pipe has been changed because there are no more the fabric bands to hold the pipe (replaced by electrician bands).

In the German forum they are talking about a reduced inner section...

      • i was planning on using castrol edge 5w30, but that seems like it's not a good idea.

i will definately be dropping the oil at the 5k mark by the sounds of it.

        • Gav, you said you had the engine oil completely black after 6.000Km?

Strange, this is mine on piece of paper after 12.000Km (never changed from new). I added about 1liter in 12.000Km using Castrol Edge...

You can't buy Castrol edge in Australia.

Kawabanga, where have you got that oil from though? A previous post you put up showed the oil being dirtier from when you wiped out your intake pipe.

If your oil is that clean after 12000 kms, then I think you have other issues...

            • The oil was taken from the dipstick....

I guess that the difference is due to the time the oil was on the paper: look at this new pic, dipstick just cleaned, same piece of paper, it seems darker, but after a couple of day the oil is absorbed by the paper and seems more clear...
What is good is that the oil, after a couple of days, is costantly brown on the paper, no darker areas close to dipstick rubbing, so seems that the oil is still good and enough fluid...

Anyway I'm going to change it at the end of September, exactly after one year I took the car, probably using Bardhal C60 5W40...

BTW, just called VW dealer and asked if I could have the new pipe even if my GTI is within tolerances (about 1Kg every 10.000Km): they said YES, but I have to pay 63€+installing time (1 hour)....

If I could get an improvement I would gladly spend that money, otherwise I'd prefer to install an external oil separator (something like this not having to empty it so many times and avoiding to insert hot air (coming from crankcase) into the air intake...

              • Hmmm, that's a bit better but for a direct injection engine not running some form of water/methanol injection, that is by far the cleanest oil I have ever seen which is why there might be another issue somewhere down the line. I would love to get a camera down into the intake of your car to see how clean it is, the specific grade of oil that is meant for our vehicles is meant to aid in cleaning deposits away in the engine, which is why I highly recommend you DO NOT use anything other than VW approved 5W30 oils.

RE the catch can you linked to, ensure you get one with an internal, washable or replaceable filter along with an oil return outlet. No point in just catching the oil without sending it back to the sump.

When my new intercooler is finished I will be interested to see the amount of blow by that has reached the factory cooler, I will b installing a catch can or getting the VW fix prior to the install. No point in a nice new cooler getting filled with blowby.

About a year ago there was only Castrol Edge Sport, which isn't VW 502/505 approved. 502/505 is the minimum spec for the Polo (in Australia) while 504/507 is the preferred spec. Recently Castrol Edge Titanium has popped up, but it still only meets the minimum 502/505 spec. Hopefully yours is Titanium...

The most readily available 504/507 oil I've seen is Penrite Enviro+

                      Are you sure......?

Are you sure it doesn't say Castrol EDGE Sport? Because if it does, it's not the right oil.

The only place I have found that you can buy the special formulation Castrol Edge 5W30 (which is specifically manufactured for VAG) is in Europe.

Check my post halfway down on page 23 of this thread, if your bottle looks like the bottom one, you have the correct oil. If its the top one, it's wrong.

                      Other approved oils include:
                      Liqui Moly Top Tech 4200
                      Shell Helix Ultra Extra
                      Penrite Enviro+ 5W30
                      Gulf Western
Castrol Edge Professional (only available in drums)

I don't have a pic (but will next time I check my oil) but mine looked like the paler oil on that paper, but then I'm less than 2000km in
I want to win cleanest engine, but from what you're saying, I may not like the prize... ::

You are worring me What do you mean about the camera? To see the air intake?
What could be the problem down the line...?
I thought it was worse if the oil was black, also because I remember at least two forum users (probably from UK) that noticed a strong oil darkening just when their GTI started to eat more oil than before...

When new of course my oil was clear as water, then became like this till about 6.000Km. From 6.000 to 12.000 it remained almost the same, didn't noticed darkening.
I think the modern oil filters are able to do a good job even if used till the suggested oil change (30.000Km in Europe for GTI)

About VW approved oils, I would like to use this Bardhal 5W40 that is 502/505, but probably this Bardhal 5W30 it's even better being 504/507...

Been thinking about getting the fix even though mine doesnt seem to be having any oil issues..will be asking my dealer about it in short while as mine as just hit 8000km and i want to do an oil change and will see about the DSG software update as well. Seen somewhere a user saying that they told him the fix was something like 63 Euros plus labour at the dealer here in Europe(cant remember the country at the moment).

Here in Italy they asked me 63€+installation (1 hour) for the new pipe...

I wrote to VW Italy using my previous ticket opened from Volksburg, asking them if I could have the new pipe for free even if I don't have big oil issues... I already know the answer

Exactly, to see down to the valves, see how clean it is down there. To be honest, mine hasn't been black since I first dropped the oil. Now it generally stays the same. If that is the same oil as factory fill and you're not burning any, I wonder if it's getting everywhere it should be... Or I could be just over thinking it
