Took the car in on Monday and the service guys have started a consumption test so I have to go back in 1000kms. But ill be back sooner than that because they STILL havent fixed my MDI.
Me: "If your guys had of taken 5 seconds to check then they would have realised that its actually worse than before"
Manager: "But we dont test it after we do the work"
    Me: "...what?!"
3rd time is a charm hey?

Raised this question when taking delivery today. Was told high consumption is to be expected and that cars are delivered de-tuned and that over time consumption will reduce and engine will loosen up. Was also told although not mandatory, recommend an oil change out at 6 months.

Don't know what to make of all this

I agree that you should expect it to be high at first but ive done 3600kms and ive had to tip 3 litres into the thing. Im gonna start keeping reciepts

Good thinking! I'd also recommend odometer readings at time of replenishment.

For me, I'll be doing a monthly dip on the oil (engine cold). if oil needs topping I'll call the dealer service centre, consult and record conversation. bottom line is record everything you think is important about your car and collaborate it with another source that can be verified.

Regardless of warranty stuff, if you take the time to do this it will help you - otherwise drive and enjoy

I'd take that as absolute bull***t mate, so theyre selling a car that doesnt meet what specs they advertise? Does the engine miraculously retune itself down the track? I'd say this is more dealer lies than anything else and just an excuse. If they truly recommend a 6 month top up, a) what if you do more than 6000kms in that time and b) why isn't it one of the scheduled services?

Because there might be the time when they have to sell the car with scheduled servicing included and they don't want to over do it.

That's normal and most likely, you will notice that you top up less and less oil for the same distance and when it settles that indicates that your engine is run in. Maybe time for the Stage2.

I completed a long run (600km) yesterday from the dealership in Mildura. Checked oil level this morning and it was just over 3/4 full. I will check it again at the end of the week and see if it needs topping up. I just bought some Liqui Moly oil (freaking expensive at $79.95) for the topping up. BTW, once the car was warmed up, I didn't baby it at all. Hopefully this method will reduce the oil loss.

I'm very interested to see the results of your consumption after the drive back from mildura, did you continuously drive after picking the car up and keep the engine running? I wonder if the long running time might have helped you in the long run.... I believe the day I pick mine up will result in around 300kms of mountain break in

                        Hey Gav,
Yeah, I'm thinking the long drive helped. All I can say is it took 3/4 of a tank of fuel. D and S modes at various points and stopped the engine once for a snack.

3/4s of a tank?! That's 31.25 liters approximately, based on 600km, you just averaged over 5L/100kms while "running in" your engine in sport mode, out of a performance based "hot hatch"!!

Sorry mate, I was getting over excited and confused with the oil level indicator. Economy was 7.3l/100km...so the trip computer said. And it did use up a full tank of fuel for the trip.

Oh, righto The official extr-urban consumption figure says 5.3, so it could have been true, if you drove sensibly

mmmm......... I have checked my manual and cant see my answer

But does someone have a picture of the dash showing the oil can symbol

If i turn the key on on my 2008 New Beetle, one of the symbols that lights up is the oil can

This doesnt happen on my GTI

I only have 1,200kms on the clock after about 5 weeks and I checked the oil the other day and it was down.
                                No problem, topped it up.
But I was thinking I have never seen the light
The manual shows the same symbol as on my NB - but not seeing it here.

                                Thanks
