Just bought some Shell Helix Ultra Extra from Super Cheap Auto, for just - and I mean just! - under $80.
I decant 1 litre into a 1 litre bottle and keep it in the car. Check oil at every fill. And yes, the oil is expensive, but saves me lots of time. And still only a fraction of the running costs...

I use that in the polo and my BMW. Usually buy it from repco when on sale and then use my NRMA membership card to get an extra 5or 10% off. Sometimes they have a 20% off for members weekend. The membership is for the BMW but just having the non road sevice membership for something like $10 a year pays for itself in member benefits and discounts.

Costco has Mobil1 5w-30 (silver label) for $60 for 6x 1qrt bottles (950ml). It's not 504/507 but if I needed something cheapish for top-ups I'd use it.carandimage The place where Off-Topic is On-Topic

Gday all I'm pretty new on here but have discovered a key point with 1.4tsi twin charged oil consumption. I purchased my MY13.5 GTI 6 weeks ago and after reading happenings on here regarding oil consumption watched the dipstick daily like a hawk. When i purchased my polo it had 12800km on it and the dipstick was showing full. Now every time i have driven the GTI i have let the oil temp get to at least 85c before booting it and even after daily checks of the oil level , (when at operating temp) haven't noticed the slightest difference in 2800km. Now this morning i went to fast fit in mornington to get the front muffler delete done and went for a drive after. To be honest I gave it a bootful as soon as i left when it was cold and had quite a fang around my neighbourhood to listen to the tone and gear change pops. When I returned home i checked the oil and low and behold the stick was at the 3/4 mark. After i added 400ml of oil i went for a 10km round trip fang after it had warmed up and no oil usage. Could this issue just be put down to blow by? It was surprising that the GTI had never used any oil but as soon as i flogged it before everything was to operating temp it used oil like a 2 stroke?

for those following my epic journey with VW. after 2 weeks and 1 chase up phone call VW has reply by saying sorry but your oil is within limit 450mL/1000km (which i think isnt true) and we wont be refunding. but lets all face it 450mL maybe within limit but who the hell would want to go back to the dealership to get an oil top up every 2000-3000km. So I'm looking to take this further thinking of legal advice. Anyone have any good legal sources out there, I dont think I can win them over by just me complaining on the phone..... sigh..

Sadly, it's true, and stated clearly in the manual, that you should expect up to 500ml per 1000km. Buying your own oil and topping up when necessary is cheaper than seeking legal advice, and more convenient than visiting the dealer every 2000km.
Don't stress too much about it. If it wasn't before, it certainly is within specs now. Just check the oil at every fill so you don't run dry. It takes all of 30 seconds. And a 5 litre bottle of oil will go a long way.

I always warm up my car till at least 85 degrees, and the only thing that you can do to avoid oil consumption is probably driving the car in manual mode for the rest of it's life, which can be a bother. Well it is in my case.
But RoknRob I will ask my legal rep to see if I have a case either way, paid a decent amount of money for the car and I dont deserve this inconvenice.
Does anyone know roughly how many litres of oil needs to be burned from the top of the dip stick before the engine oil light turns on ?

There is much more to this issue than the way the car is driven.

The damage appears to be done early on so it won't matter what procedure is used from that point on.sigpic
