    • My GTI has come out from it's engine rebuilt today.

I am yet to get a full run down of what has been completed on it, but so far there is no soot coming from the exhaust, and first gear sluggishness is completely gone.

I have asked them to scan & email me all of the car's paperwork/history as I never received anything even for the oil consumption tests.

I must tip my hat though, Osborne Park VW's Service Manager has done right by me finally, and they even through in my 12 month service for free, re-detailed the car, and re-applied the paint protection to the whole car for nothing!

Well as you've had a full engine rebuild it doesn't really make sense to then make you pay for a service...

Still glad they've done the paint protection etc though.

        • Had the breather fitted at around ~4300km after high oil usage. Check oil level has just come on again at ~5300km on the way home from work..

Will give the dealer a call in the morning, pretty unimpressed.

You might get a nasty surprise when the timing belt service is due...

This is the only part of your post that is sane.
I am a very big lancer fan. They arent a drivers car by any means but as an appliance they are brilliant. The 2.4 mivec pulls like a train even if it sounds like a truck on startup and clutch and gearbox are heavy. I have had 1 or 2 at any time since 1993. I use Mitsubishi for family hack duties, VW for my personal passion.

I just sold lancer #2 a 1997 model 1 week before christmas. It had 298,000kms. It had developed a tappet cover leak. The seats were worn out. Holes in the carpet under the drivers feet. It had plenty of battle scars on the outside. The aircon pulley was noisey because it got flooded at one point. I'm not urging everyone to do the same but you can add up the money I saved on service costs. I wouldnt have received any more than the $765 I got on ebay had I serviced it religiously. (I did do both the timing belts) Might have got more had I not cancelled 3 bids because they were from people with bad feedack or tried to sell when everyone was broke before christmas.

To me it sounds like a lot of gti drivers are carrying out the same service schedules. They are topping up the oil every time the light comes on. The only difference is that even with a largely unserviced 300K on the clock I was getting 10-15,000km.

Sorry for the off topic but I had to defend the flame. I'll go back to my corner now.

When you get sick, you go to a doctor. You don't just go 'she'll be right mate' and die the next morning, do you?

Servicing may cost a bit, but you'll save your eardrums, save fuel, produce less emissions, have a car that you know will actually start on a cold morning (unless you have an Alfa ) and when it's time to sell up, you might even get a bit of money back.
If the owner can get away without ever servicing the vehicle and sell it right before the inevitable happens, good for them.

That then leaves the possibility of the next buyer ending up with a huge time bomb on their hands... but then again, if one wants to take a chance with a second hand car without any service history, then by all means, roll the dice.

Alternatively, the owner may not ever find a buyer for their vehicle with no service history, so they're also taking a gamble and are dependent on others who'd take the gamble themselves. The owner also wouldn't expect to sell it at market prices, unless the buyer is a real numpty.

I would not be too concerned about the way total strangers treat their own property or possessions, as long as it doesn't affect you or the community in a significant way. Less stress is good.

                • So Day 4 after engine rebuild.

Oil spots are back... and, the engine oil temperature is now shooting up much faster. Hit 102C yesterday after 20m of city driving from cold. Also there is a loud rattle coming from the engine compartment upon turning the car off.

                  Back to VW today.

Had my breather pipe changed around 4155km, on around 4600km now and dip stick is showing just above1/2 way down.. You are not alone... I've also had to tow the car twice due to sparkies/ignition coils issues if that makes you feel any better about your car.... rage incoming.

It seems like the older CAVE engine only needs to update 1 crankcase breather pipe while the new CTHE needs to update 2 pipes in total?

Any idea if the engine ECU flash is mandatory or its just a regular software update? What could be the changes?

                        • If you have time, take a look to what this crazy German boy is telling me HERE

From his point of view VW is on the right side with TSI-180 and when warranty will be expired - like we use to say here - "will be all your cabbage"...!

Been there. Muir Rd Chullora. Easy to get to but not enough off street parking. Nice cafe. Ironically(???) right opposite the SITA waste recycling. Cant help with C4 though.

                            • I am suggesting I can provide the C4, if we run out of that then I have easy access to diesel and fertiliser.

Something like this should send a fairly clear message
