Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • All I can say to you guys is ACCC statutory warranty.

My mate that got his 12 month old Volvo replaced gave the replacement vehicle back after 1 month & received a refund. His problems weren't nearly as bad as what some of you guys are putting up with.

    • Hi guys,
Quick question regarding the oil light. I can't see mine illuminate when ignition is first turned on on the instrument cluster. Is this normal or has my lamp blown?
I have only had the car 2 weeks and never spotted it.

      Comment

      • To be honest I don't know, i have never payed much attention to it, but I would assume with all the electronics in the car it would throw up an error and notify you if it had blown as it does with any bulb on the outside of the car. The bulb is a LED so "theoretically" it should never blow.

        • I would have thought the oil lamp would illuminate on ignition turn on (self test) just like all the other lamps in the instrument cluster?

          Comment

          • It doesn't. I've asked this question before on this forum. I agree, it is ridiculous to not have this lamp checked on ignition. Your dealer can check it if you insist.

I just check my oil every fill now.

It was funny when I was at Burwin yesterday some girl (in her 20s) was going NUTS at them. Her car had just come out of warranty and something bad went wrong and they were only going to approve 70% of the costs. I felt for her.
Just tell them you are going to get an independant emissions test and take the results to the media eg 3aw, a current affair, etc.
I am quite sure they will start to care

              • i get to pick my MY12.5 GTI up from it's engine rebuild on Monday afternoon.

Hoping the oil splatter and consumption is "fixed".

For the last week while it has been worked on the dealership gave me a Trendline 1.4 Polo.. Manual. It is so dynamically different to the GTI! No way i'd buy one

                • I'm pretty sure about 10 years ago there was a holden service job changing the dipstick. The new one had a bigger gap between the upper and lower marks so that they would make the next service without the oil light coming on. One of the V8 engines. Knew someone who worked at a dealer and I'm sure I heard him say words to that effect. I think the root cause was short skirt pistons with a lot of clearance to reduce inertia and friction. So VW are not the only ones, though sounds like some of you guys need to put an extra sump on. 15 litres of oil between service is normal? Its a credit to the engines efficiency that it can burn oil in that quantity and not blow a ****load of smoke.

                  • There is a thread on Australian Ford Forums (I used to have a Ford) about the super-charged V8 engines using oil. They consider using a litre in 5000km as bad . Anyway, the story goes is that to avoid the issue, at some stage the sump capacity was increased from something like 8L to 9L.

                    • After owning a car that can do 25,000km with out burning any oil, I don't buy the bull5h1t that VW pass on to owners as to what is considered normal oil useage

                      • I dont service my cars at all. I drive them till the stop running. And event then I begrudge putting 4 spark plugs in when only one cylinder is misfiring. (the polo will be different because it is leased). I have had my current lancer for 3 years/80,000 never serviced, never pulled the dipstick. The only time the bonnet comes up is when I need 12V to pump bike tyres. The oil light still hasnt come on.

These clowns are saying it is perfectly normal to put in half a litre of oil with every tank of fuel.

You're an idiot if any of that is true.

Thought so. When I checked erWin the other day it had been updated.

WHAT?! Thats crazy. Stupid really. A Lancer would cost less than $200 for a normal service. Why not just do it?

You might get a nasty surprise when the timing belt service is due...
