I really don't want the same oil consumption issues that others are getting. So I've been keeping a close eye on it.
Thankfully I've just passed the 2200km mark and the oil hasn't budged since I bought it. And I by no means drive it easily around the twisties.

I followed the engine run-in thread posted on this forum and I've always been a firm believer of running an engine in how its going to be used for the rest of its life. Although I'm not sure if that is responsible for the good oil consumption I'm getting (currently).

I just hope it remains like this.

Car is faultless at the moment.
Fingers crossed for you that it stays that way. I thought mine wasn't going to use any in the early stages, but it doesn't show clearly on the dipstick until the level drops to the cross-hatched [or "B"] section.

From 1700km I was able to "see" the oil going down. At 7600km I've now added approx 2L, which I imagine means the car has used a little more than that 2L, presuming "full" is somewhere in the "A" [or above cross-hatched] section.

FWIW, and it's probably been covered in here before, I think driving lots of short trips, so the oil never gets warm, exacerbate the rate of usage.

      Thanks, me too.

Compared to some others on here, I guess 2ltrs after 7600 isn't that bad at all. I just can't believe these engines devour so much oil yet VW insist a twincharged engine be serviced after 15k km's. I'll be doing at my own oil and filter at every 3k being used to the JDM service schedules.
      Cheap insurance I guess.

      • My oil was at the ball after 1700ks, after 1ltr top up with Castrol (car was originally filled with shell) I got it tuned and its been at its highest point now since and im now @ 5500ks.
I did the warm it up to 90deg oil temp then drive it like you stole it method and its been running perfectly since.

Think of it this way. If the car is burning around 2 litres or MORE of oil every 7600km, then you've basically performed an oil change without dumping the oil. Hahahahaha
Those Engineers at VW have thought of everything. What a great design feature.

Pity I can't ensure the oil being burnt is the old oil. Knowing my luck it's only burning the new oil now.

                • OKay so heres a bit of a silly question, but anyone got any tips on checking the oil level in the GTI?

I pulled the stick out the other day but its so damn long its hard to get it in without bumping it and getting oil over it.

                  • Get yourself some paper towel pull it out while holding the paper towel along the stick wiping the oil off. Then put it in again, pull it out and take a reading. Make sure the engine is off.

Just remembered something. If oil flys out of the dip stick hole (or fumes pour out) when the dip stick is removed and engine running, that is a sure sign of engine blow by. If you've got that then video it.

                    • My oil consumption seems to be getting worse, not better...

                      2700kms: 800mls
                      7900kms: 900mls
15000kms: Service, nearing another top up (lowest point on cross hatch)
19000kms: Going to need an entire litre...

First 15000kms was a miz of highway and city. Since my last service, 4000kms has been only city driving.

Seems to indicate it burns a lot of oil sitting in traffic, rather than highway driving.

Nothing to worry about? And to think I'm planning on a tune too...

Interesting Eddie, because dont forget that you are also not only sitting in traffic but also in 30+ temperatures as well. These cars will use more oil in hot weather too so it will be interesting to see what happens during the cooler months.

                        • Very true that. I have noticed my exhaust has been getting very black and quite quick during this hot summer so I assume its running slightly more rich to prevent pinging.

Idle speed has been up as well on average from 50rpm (550rpm) on 28 degree days to 400rpm (900rpm) on 40 degree days

                          • An update on my situation. I rang the dealer, asked for an oil consumption test. They said that they'd be happy to do one, but they recommended not doing it until after the 1 year/15,000km service.

Apparently VWs are, when new, filled with a "multi-grade" oil for breaking the engine in. At the 1 year/15,000km service they drain the oil and put in a different type of oil which is to be used for the rest of the car's lifetime.

I'm about a month away from the car being one year old. They suggested the following plan of action:

                            1. come in tomorrow to get the "multi-grade" oil topped up.

                            2. come in for the one-year service in a few weeks time. Once they change over the oil in that service, they will set up the engine for an oil consumption test.

                            3. come in 1,000 km later for them to see the results of the test.

Do you guys have any thoughts on the above?

                              Yep, it's all lies mate

Go to another dealer, don't ask for a consumption test, tell them how much oil it has used and that you know it's outside the manufacturers guidelines (take the owners manual in with you) and would like it looked at, please.

Have a read through this entire thread and see how soon some people get consumption tests carried out, this dealer is just trying to play you like an idiot.

Very good point gavs. Just a little worried as I'd expect it to drop since new...

I followed your preffered run in method and I think if I didn't drive it hard from day dot, it would be even worse for oil consumption.

Do you have any issues with oil? When new and now, since tuned.

Gotta chat in person one day too, so I can make sure mine is all good before/if I get it worked on
