Go to another dealer, don't ask for a consumption test, tell them how much oil it has used and that you know it's outside the manufacturers guidelines (take the owners manual in with you) and would like it looked at, please.
Thanks for your advice gavs. I'm a little confused though - yesterday you advised me to ring the dealer and ask for an oil consumption test. What's the best way forward?

So the dealer is lying about using different types of oil?

My oil is down to the bottom of the dipstick (at the orange ball) - from reading other posts from yesterday, does this mean I've used 0.6L of oil in 2,500km? Because that doesn't seem like that much...

    • I've taken mine back twice in its life for refills once around 3500-4000 and once again at 6000-6500 and currently sitting around 8800 and my oil has gone down a few mm. Still in the A part of the dipstick. When engine is hot its mid way between A and B but when dead cold its at A. Don't wanna jinx myself but I think (hope) its levelled itself out

        1. Come in and get the fake/non-existent multi-grade oil topped up with whatever normal oil the dealership uses. They are just trying to brush you off mate.

This urban myth about "special oil" from the factory is rubbish.

        • Is the oil consumption test a waste of time then?

I'm in Sydney. Does anyone have the name of a person at a Sydney dealership who's been helpful with this issue?

I'm still confused over how to get this resolved..

Sorry for the confusion mate, I was hoping you would have been lucky dealing with the dealership but it looks like you are dealing with a dodgy one instead

Yes, the dealer is lying about the use of a different oil for the first 15000kms. I doubt if any dealership has even seen a polo GTI go through their service centre at 15000kms with only the original oil in it, even mine isn't that good!

Your dipstick reads the top litre of the oil level in the sump. If you're at the bottom of the ball after 2500kms then I'm sorry but you will probably pass the test and they will do nothing to help you

I followed your preffered run in method and I think if I didn't drive it hard from day dot, it would be even worse for oil consumption.

Do you have any issues with oil? When new and now, since tuned.

Gotta chat in person one day too, so I can make sure mine is all good before/if I get it worked on
Nah mate, aside from the first 5000kms (lost just over a litre) mine has settled down, especially post tune. In fact, mine was averaging about 1l/10,000kms after 6700 when I changed to dedicated Top Tech 4200, it's now at a guess at around 1L/12,000kms. Maybe because I do a lot of highway kms in summer down the peninsular but it's noticeably better than pre-tune.

                =(

So what are my options then?

Again if anyone has had good dealings with a dealer in Sydney please let me know.

                • Hi Skal
At the top of the Orange ball (once oil has fully drained back after an hour or so), you are at around 1.4 litres or more down from the top of "Zone A".
I have had a chat to the mechanics at the Blacktown dealership, they seemed to be fairly switched on, although it's hard to know. They were previously a commercial dealer only, but I think are now also selling VW cars. Stay away from Liverpool IMO.
I have just had the consumption test done in my car. 1.2 litres for 940kms. I have refused the fitment of the magic pipes so far until I seek legal advice. The dealer was ordered by the CTTT to provide me with diagnostic reports following testing, but has refused to do so. I guess it was too much to expect them to comply. Back to the CTTT, I will keep everyone updated.

                  • Thanks for your help RossP and Gavs.

I just had a chat with Neil from Blacktown, he was helpful. Said I could just drop it off tomorrow and they'll have a look at it to see if they can find the cause of the issue. Here's hoping for a good result.

                    • Took the car to Blacktown this morning. the service desk guy was somewhat helpful although did keep spouting the party line about vw cars having high consumption when new and it probably being within spec.

He said they'll check it for leaks or any other problems and top it up. Offered to do an oil consumption test but I declined. I think I'll only give that a go if the issue arises again after the 1 year service.

I asked about the "different" oil urban legend. He said vw does add some mysterious additives to the oil when it's new. You can top it up with normal oil prior to the one year. If you drain and change it prior to the 1 year service you can void your warranty. They drain and change the oil at the 1 year service and say that should improve oil consumption.

                      • Uh oh, Blacktown believe own urban myths too. If there were special break in additives in the oil that could void your warranty if removed, they would be obliged to inform you of that in the service manual. They don't. My dealer sent me a letter after 6 months attempting to get me to do an additional service the car, stating that their records indicated that I would "benefit" from it. There is nothing in any of the manuals that specifies a 12 month service BTW. Read it for yourself - it states long life 2 years, although Australian dealers insist on a 15,000k service. So - special break in additives? I don't believe them, there is no proof of that whatsoever. Ask them to provide you with some doco to back up their statement - especially about voiding warranty. Bet they can't.

                        • Yes, what's the deal with the first service? I noticed the logbook said long life service - first at 15,000 km, not dependant on time. But of course each dealer says you need it after a year. My trip computer has been programmed to demand a service after 1 year. Can I ask them to reset so it won't bug me for a service until 15,000 or 2 years have actually passed?
