Was reading through this thread and this comment is very misleading (mechanical losses) is not 60% nor is all that lost through ring contact. The main reason of mechanical losses is the inefficiency of a crank shaft.

    • I seriously must be one of the lucky ones.

Only needed to top up 200ml of oil in the 3200km I've had my car.

Still got a litre in my boot just in case

        • Mine too, only moved 1-2mm on the dipstick with 13,000km done but I changed my oil very often. Maybe we could share what we are doing right or its simply pure luck.

My enthusiast friend used to tell me not to rev the engine hard even when my water temp reach 90 but I do not believe in him as I did not play with oil temp and pressure gauge back then. True enough, after few thousand km my Honda starts to drink oil and 0.7-1L every 7000km to me was a bad sign, furthermore my fuel consumption went up. After I installed oil and water temp/pressure gauges, it was then I realised it really takes sometime for oil temp to reach optimum temp for it to protect the engine well.

            • Rumors in Italy are starting to talk about forged pistons from VW for who still have problems also after engine and breather replacement...
One Polo GTI and one A1 TFSI are waiting for that... Let's see what happens...

                  • A bit off topic but super cheap auto are having a sale on Castrol Edge 5W-30 oil. $40 bucks for 5L.

Anyway, back on topic, after my last fill from the stealership, my oil hasnt seem to have moved at all. Havent done anything different but my engine did tick over the 5000 k mark before i got my last fill.

                    • Guys - I have a current model Jetta with the same 1.4 TSI albeit with a little less power...

Is the Jetta and Polo gti engine the same physically with simply software changes to make extra grunt or are they different in a few ways?

Curious because the Jetta uses no oil at all, have covered 8000kms so far.

Software and hardware, for example the polo GTI engine (apparently) uses different pistons that are ceramic coated, induction system differs, exhaust system differs...

I don't think that oil is VW approved. It "meets VW specifications" but that's different to being approved. If you want to keep your warranty, I'd avoid non-approved oils.

                          • That's correct. It only meets
The VW 502 and 505 specifications. The polos use the very specific VW 507 spec.

Castrol are consistently vague in their choice of words (deliberately, I reckon) so you could never tell if the product was "approved" or just "meets & exceeds", but the new Castrol Edge 5W-30 A3/B4 actually has 502.00/505.00 approval.

                              Not strictly true.

For vehicles on the time and distance regime (fixed 15 000 km/12 month intervals), one may use either 502.00/505.00 or 504.00/507.00

For vehicles on the LongLife regime (variable 15 000 km/12 month ~ 30 000 km/24 month intervals), one may use only 504.00/507.00

                              • my car is going in for:
-Oil Temperature MFD has never worked.
-Car uses oil – Last top up of 1litre was at 6,000km. Please check again
-Soot – Car was cleaned on Sunday and is completely covered in soot. This occurs only a day or two after driving the car (very annoying!)
                                - Oil breather pipe – This has been fitted to many cars with some success and I would like to see it installed to aid in the above issues
-Seals need lubricating around all doors
-DSG – If any software upgrades are available
