I highly doubt it's an entire engine irrespective of what the service staff tell you. For the repair of an oil-burner the billing code as well as the order codes point to the "new engine" just being the basic bones of the engine. Otherwise registration details etc all have to be changed as well at you local roads authority. It's a new basic engine, consisting of block, pistons, head, valves etc. just the basic mechanicals, nothing else.
My dealer said new base engine for mine in a few weeks, when they showed me the order it was all from within Australia and a reasonable list of parts, so I don't expect a whole new engine(nor would I, most of the parts work fine). Just have to hope it all gets put together properly at the dealer...not that the factory has made a big difference
So what does everyone think about compression rates?
Can someone explain to me how that effects the oil usage - each time you take the dipstick out while the cars running there's a distinct hiss which might indicate something?

Correct me if I'm wrong
Your cylinder compression isn't related to the hissing you hear if you remove the dipstick or oil cap while the engine is running.
Worn or poorly designed piston rings will be the main cause for poor compression in the cylinders - which in turn will allow oil to be burnt while the engine is running and loss of power.

Why are you taking the dipstick out while it's running? Like WTF?
carandimage The place where Off-Topic is On-Topic I used to think I was anal-retentive until I started getting involved in car forums
After getting the mechatronics replacement recall done to my car I thought i would see how the car went tooling around in 'D' for destroy for a little while.
Something kawabanga and I have discussed at length is the idiotic software programmers at VW and their inability to make the DSG and engine operate correctly with each other and how due to the shift parameters always sending the car into the highest gear possible, as quickly as possible, how this could affect oil consumption. Well, I now have proof that it does.
In the 3 weeks I drove ONLY in D, the car burned OVER 1L of oil. 1L/2000 kms of mostly highway driving!!!!! To put that in perspective, the car is almost due for it's 60,000kms service and in the previous 12,000kms I DID NOT TOP UP ONCE. I drive dedicated in manual all of the time because of mechanical sympathy and I have now proven to myself that yes indeed, I am smarter than the software and I produce less wear on the car. I will drop down 2 gears when accelerating out of the eastlink tunnels and up the hill onto the eastern freeway, not labour the car in 7th gear. I won't change immediately into 2nd gear with a light throttle take off in traffic and refuse to kick down when needing to accelerate.
Oh, I still haven't topped up again, driving in manual....
Yeah I had highlighted this a few months ago. Whenever I go away with work my wife chooses to drive my car (enjoys the zippy ness she says) she always drives in 'D' and I have noticed oil consumption up to approx 300ml/1000km. However, when I as the main driver use the car always in 'M' unless in cruise on freeway my consumption is around 100ml/1000km
You are right Gavs, terrible software program for D...
Rumors say that with the new Polo GTI (192hp) there will be one more option with DSG (beside the possibility to have a manual gear box): Eco mode (the current D, to ensure best fuel economy), D (with a new program that will increase engine average rpm) and the current S...
I'm not sure of that, I've read it somewhere on the web...

If what you say is true and the new gen Polo's use the same gearbox, the changes would be done through the code/programming which could potentially allow the older generation Polo's to have the updated software?
But knowing VW they wont do this unless someone files a law suit and even then they'll continue to give us the same old "it's meant to be like that" BS...
