So here's a conspiracy theory. With all the 'global delays' for the GTI being put down to 'allocations v demand' - maybe there really isn't an issue with demand and VW are scrambling around trying to fix the engine issues before more roll off the production line......

Polo GTI High Oil Usage - Discussion Thread

This is a sticky topic.

So the service guy from the dealership got back to me and advised that i have to give the engine time to bed in and seal. Saying the work that was done to it is the equivilent of having a new engine, so things will need time to seal again. He assured me that it will get better, perhaps take it for along drive up the coast to help run it in better and to just top up the oil and monitor how much its using. I asked about re-embersment for the oil used as ive already purchsed and used 11L upto this point and advised he couldnt do anything about that and suggested i contact VW customer care.
gavs - That 1 GTI doing a oil consumption test is dealership specific.
prcurrie - Not sure if your car on its way will be part of the batch. All i know is apparently a bulletin went out sepcifcally about this issue within a certain batch. I know if you check other forums from other parts of the world, it appears people in europe were reporting this issue early in 2010.
So for now all i can do is contact VW customer care and monitor the oil usage to see if it improves..

It's not just a batch, is apparently all MY10 and MY 11 spec cars that are affected. teh MY11.5 onwards supposedly have the different pstons and rings but finding out the truth from this company is like finding a real leprechaun at the end of a rainbow instead of a short, chain smoking irishman.
I agree with brad. If it doesn't improve, demand a whole new engine, ensure it has been built at least after march this year (the later the better) which will show with date stam stickers all over the engine. If they refuse, tell them you will envoke your consumer rights to reject the vehicle due to the vehicle being defective.
Wait on that outcome though because it might still come good.sigpic

So Gavs. Mine which was built in September (MY11.5) 'should' have the different pistons on it??
I'm waiting for a call back from the Service Manager at the dealership where I bought mine. I put some questions to them yesterday and he was very quick to call back. Will let you know what they say to me......Polo GTI - 5 door - Candy White, Xenons, Comfort Package, Audio Upgrade, Bluetooth, Parking Sensors and Tint

Thanks for the great advise guys.
I contacted VW customer care yesterday afternoon and made them aware of my situation and how unhappy i am. They have logged a report and are going to look into it for me. Maybe i will get some sort of compensation for all this oil i have had to pay for and by the looks of things continue to pay for. I'll keep you guys posted..

prcurrie, yours won't be MY11.5, it will be MY12 so yes, theoretically it will have the new pistons etc in it.sigpic

I wish you all the best Alex.
I have just done close to 1600km and have just added a further 1L of oil. That's 2L in total.
I have contacted my dealership and its going in for a consumption test in the next day or so.
Out of interest I order my car in December 2010 and recieved it in September.Candy White 5dr GTI - bi xenons, audio upgrade, tint....special high oil usage model!

wow, this may all be just a conspiracy (no production while they try to fix piston issues), but it sure does explain alot. I hope its not true, thoughMY12.5 Candy White 5 door Polo GTI. Upgrades/Mods = RNS510 H LED, RVC camera, Auto Lights Dash Sound Actuator GTI button, Gavs Footrest(!)

Good luck with customer care Alex. So far I've had the air compressor, piston rings and new turbo to be replaced... all within 8 months :0
I only got the usual spat of "your car is under warranty, sorry and goodbye".
PS. the new rings seem to be doing the job so far after about 5-600 kms.

OK. So just got off the phone to the Service Manager at my dealership. I asked the question about the high oil consumption and his response was that this was the first time he's heard about the Polo GTIs consuming oil. He said to me that he would expect that within the first 15,000kms it may use a litre of oil.
I then said that there are reports of GTIs using 1 litre per 1000kms and he seemed a little shocked! He said he was seeing Golf GTI issues with oil, but no Polo GTIs...
My dealership is on the outskirts of Melbourne so I don't think that they've sold many Polo GTI's to actually see the issue come up.
Fingers crossed I'm not the first!
On the plus side, he said that he received a news release yesterday that Australia's allocation for cars has been increased by VW Global so the wait times may be coming down.....Polo GTI - 5 door - Candy White, Xenons, Comfort Package, Audio Upgrade, Bluetooth, Parking Sensors and Tint
