Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • I wasn't given a figure, but I did check myself and it was had nearly used 600mls in the first 700kms of the test.

I am assuming I have to go through the whole "bedding in/run in" process again once these have been installed.

That should hoepfully allow a nicer seal to form and stop the high oil consumption.

    • *Touch wood* Loving my "Sensible" TSI hehe, but seriously this sounds like VGA needs to organise a campaign for Polo GTI's...too many reporting faults, high oil consumption one person on here is already getting a new engine after only a few weeks of post delivery

      • Technically 2 for Miles because one was RS out of the box.

Hooti3, when was your GTI built by chance? Is it the MY10 or MY11 spec car?

Hail, that is what I am trying to say. Granted, this is a small community by itself and I know there will be other members who will jump down my throat for writing this but indeed, we now have 3 members off the top of my head with GTI's already confirmed that have this issue, Miles Away is on engine number 3 to try and fix the issue already and this car has only been on sale for 12 months in Australia. This is a bigger issue than is being let on.

          • Brought mine in a while ago, too - told them their $30 Litre of oil lasted just over 1000kms. They kept the car all day to check for leaks (I hadn't seen any drips anywhere.) They couldn't find any. Refilled. Want to see me again in 500km.

Does that make me member 3 or 4, gavs?

I'd like to gloat about my 77TSI using no (and I mean NO) oil after 8,000km, but I'd be ignoring my own car's quality issues (twice-rectified fuel line rattle).

77TSI is that KW or PS? Its such a small amount that I'm not surprised it doesn't use any oil....... J/K

Yes, but at least a Polo GTI can get to the oil topups quicker.....

4 now Rob, unfortunately You also shouldn't be paying for oil, they should be doing free top-ups for you. Well, at least in Victoria they do....

                    • Hey Guys,

Im new to this forum and fairly new to the VW owners community. I too am expriencing oil consumption issues with my Polo GTI.

I ordered my polo GTI in decemeber last year and picked it up in early March of this year.
I kept an eye on the oil levels for the first 5000k's as advised and found that pretty much every 1000 k's i had to top up 1 - 1.2 L of oil.
Reported this to my dealership who then got me to do a 1000k oil consumption test, sure enough, the car chewed 1.2L of oil with over 5000k's on it.

First I was told it could be an issue with engine bearings, and then after they advised me that my car was part of a batch with faulty piston rings.
So first i had to wait 2 weeks for the parts, then they had my car for another week and a half to replace the piston rings.

When i picked the car up, they advised this would fix the issue and that I was the first reported problem at this dealership. Although they did mention 1 polo GTI was currently doing a 1000k oil consumption test.
I've since done around 1000k's and guess what? The check oil light came on today.

The car has now done close to 11,000k's and i've purchased 11L of oil (used every drop).

I contacted the service department at my dealership today and waiting for them to get back to me. But im just really starting to lose my patience and just dont know what to do.

                      • Alex, what you can do is to reject the vehicle but there is something like a good favour clause etc in the consumer laws that says that the party that has sold you a defective product (in this case your car) must be allowed a reasonable time / number of attempts to rectify this issue. If you're still not satisfied that they have, you can legally reject the car and theoretically should be entitled to a refund or at least adequate compensation. Speak to the service manager and dealer principle, express your concerns that the "fix" hasn't fixed the issue and seeing as this is a known problem, you have concerns that it will not work this time either.

Was that 1 GTI on an oil consumtion test from that dealership specifically or did they mean the whole of the country?

                        • Does anyone know if they've rectified / modified any of the engine parts from the original GTIs built to ones coming off the production line now?

Alex - you mentioned that the dealer told you there was a 'batch' of faulty piston rings in some GTIs. If this was the case, would the cars coming out now (namely mine which is on the boat....!!) have the issue rectified?

Literally with weeks before it arrives, I'm doubting my purchase if it's going to be a constant struggle with Oil and speaking with my Dealer (which hasn't been positive this far in).......

Your next step (from the dealers POV) should be a new turn-key engine. ie: pull the old one out & bolt in a complete unit with no accessory changeover.

I'm not sure why they are bothering with just rings because new rings mean the bore has to be re-crosshatched/honed & I assume the are using something similar to a nickasil coating which usually can't be honed.

                            • What really worries me is summer is coming around the corner, the car has yet to prove its metal in hot climates.

                              Fingers crossed for you all!

To be fair, I only paid for the first litre. The service department told me to hold on to the bottle so they could refill it for me. (This implies they are aware of an issue... and fully expected me to keep losing oil.)

They didn't refill the bottle this time, since they refilled the engine, but I will be seeing them again in 500kms, anyway. They didn't make mepay for that.

So we go through the process, knowing full well that ultimately something more will need to be done...

So far, one (thanks for sharing Alex) member has had the piston rings done, and no improvement...

I have say I am pretty grateful for this forum, though. I would never have bothered to check the oil level - it's 2011, for goodness sakes! - until the oil light came on, were it not for the fact that it has come up so often here... Glad I didn't wait for the light to come on...

For those who are interested, I think mine was a February (or was it March?) build...
