  • More news regarding my story,

    They will replace my rim!

I am glad they did that. The nearest service centre other than them is 20km's further from my house.

Lets hope I don't have problems in the future. Fingers crossed.

Positive outcome to a crap situation.

Other news:I have so far done 200kms into the 1000kms for the Oil consumption test.

I don't dare look at the dipstick.

    • I've done my third (or is it now fourth?) top up. I'm averaging 1L for every 1000km...

Is it Canberra driving? (We don't drive long enough to warm up the car on weekdays, so we never get the thrash it until weekends!)

      • Hey guys, first time post, thought i'd share my experience. Ive had my GTI since January, i've done 23,0000kms. From 0 to 15,0000 I had to top it up with 2 litres. After the first service i've had to top it up with 1/2 litre (150000 - 20000). From 20000-23000 it has used no oil. Its been driven hard since day one, and i always wait for that oil temp to get to 92.

gavs (and others), many thanks for your comments, will stick to the 91c before giving it some...my daily work drive is down and up a range, on the way down it doesn't hit those temps till halfway to work, on the way home a lot earlier, and going up the range is fun!

get up to about 102 on the way up, usually gets down to about 93 by the time i park the car at home.

          • No worries mate

sklass, that's good news for those sufferers out there, I intend to try my own solution for teh time being. 15,000kms is just a long time in my mind to change oil on a new car, so awaiting a bottle of teh good stuff so I can do an oil change, will be interesting to see the weight difference of the old filter vs new

            • 700kms on the clock and the oil warning light came on.
had a check of the 'ol dipstick.....virtually empty!
topped up with 1L and will check again tonightcalled the dealer and was informed by a desk jockey that this was normal....?
what? its normal to buy a brand new car and find no oil in it after 700kms?

Most sensible advice I've ever heard.

You should always check all the levels before accepting the vehicle. It's amazing how many freebies you can get out of an embarrased salesman if the PD you've paid $2k for is deficient.

                      • Ok, so I changed the oil finally last night. What a bloody shock!

Before our last cruise I did a top-up with a 1L bottle of Shell Helix 5W-30 to 504 spec, just to be on the safe side because the oil level was looking low on the dipstick. After topping up with 1L, it was basically full again, (which in hindsight is odd) and that was at around 3500kms.

Last night, I checked the oil level and as of 6700kms, the oil level hasn't really changed and my driving style really hasn't changed over the last 3200kms. Could it be the bedding in proceedure I did? Maybe, but it leads me more and more to believe the oil that is factory fill is more to blame.

When I drained the oil, it was horrible. I haven't seen oil like that ever come out of a petrol car, my old diesel hilux was the last time I ever saw oil that filthy. It was a concoction that looked like molasses, albeit with the regular fully synthetic viscosity. There was a certain level of grit in the oil too, obviously the reminants of the engine's break in. The filter too was considerably heavier than the replacement going in, even factoring in oil reminants that we couldn't drain out after taking to it with a hacksaw and drill (I really should have taken photos but I didn't feel like oiling up my camera!)

So, after the new filter was on and the old oil gone, a quick 1 litre poured through to ensure it was all flushed out, I filled it up with what I counted as 4 litres out of the oil bottle. Stupid my counted wrong though, didn't I! It was only 3. Interestingly though (I personally find this retarded), the dipstick showed that the sump was theoretically empty. That last litre though and the level climbed up the dipstick so the "smart" VW engineers have made the dipstick only enter the top litre area of the sump so when you think your car is burning through a super high amount of oil, it very well may not be!

So, to all of you worried about your oil consumption, just be wary in thinking that it's burning through more oil than it is because that dipstick only reads the equivalent of 1 litre of oil.

Thank to GTI JOE too for putting me onto the oline site for Liqui Moly, next day delivery which was nice. And for those wondering, $26 for a new filter and sump plug

Thanks for the heads up, but I'm sure it's still burning through oil.

Get oil warning light, top up with X amount of oil, drive...get warning light Y kms later...still works out to 1L/1000km for me, I don't bother reading the dip stick to judge my oil consumption.

                          Or have I missed something?

This comes as no surprise to me gavs and is probably the reason why I haven't been overly concerned thus far about oil consumption. I was more or less informed of this upon pick up of the car from dealer.

I'm aware many of us are having different usage levels but until my car starts using ridiculous amounts of oil I don't feel the need to be too concerned for now.

We can also take some solace in that your levels haven't changed much in the 3200kms since replacing that crappy factory oil with something decent.

                            • yeah the condition of the oil from my 77tsi left alot to be desired when it was dropped out at 5000km, it looked very similar to when i drained the old camry when i first got it, people hadn't serviced it in about 2 years.

Noticed any difference in idle/running with the fresh stuff in?
