Go to Supercheap / Repco / Autobarn. Ask for an oil that is VW 504.00 approved (Shell & Penrite are likely contenders). Make them show you on the bottle or the techspec on the internet where it says 504.00 approved. That is all you need. If it's approved then it's been to the VW labs, the mfr has paid the fee & VW issue a letter of approval.

Repco recently had the Shell 504.00 on special for $50 which is a bit of a bargain. Shell Helix 504.00 is factory fill in many VW group engines.

I think a lot of people over-analyse these things.

    • Ok so went to livo VW for an oil consumption test and he told me there have replaced the hose on 2 cars so far and he said both of them went worse after the part. He said one of teh cars went through 1.1 L in 600km (not good at all). I asked him what happens afterwards and he said all he could do is put the old part back. WOW !!! so this thing will never resolve mind as well request for a new car cause clearly it is a defect. Anyone here actually had a breather hose replacement and it actually worked?

      • I still don't understand how this breather hose is supposed to help?
Its clearly a piston ring sealing issue as per the LS1 engines. Oil gets past the rings gets burnt up and blown out the exhaust hence the oil spots on offending vehicles rear ends.

        • My experience (already related here):

_Before breather pipe change: 1 liter every 10.000Km and big intake pipe completely oil-wet.
_With new breather: in the last 2.000Km the oil get down on the dipstick of only about 1mm (halved) and the intake pipe is completely dry.

Same experience as kawabanga.....so far so good. I will post IF the situation goes to crap.
Oh...just my 2 cents worth regarding oil brand. I still think that Liqui Moly Top Tec 4200 seems a better oil for the Polo engine. I was using this to top up and it seemed to stem the bleeding until the dealership changed the valve and hose. Funny, when they asked what I was using to top up, they didn't seem to know Liqui Moly???WTF? They suggested using Castrol Professional Titanium if top ups are required?

The problem is in the other direction - during the combustion stroke, pressure from the cylinder gets past the rings into the crankcase which causes excessive flow through the breather, carrying oil along with it into the inlet tract to get burnt up and blown out the exhaust hence the oil spots on offending vehicles rear ends.

It's mostly to do with preventing intake buildup fuel not cleaning the inlet tract due to the direct injection

              • After thinking mine was a drinker being on the top up mark on the dipstick at 1700ks, just checked it then after a drive and now its at 3600k's and it hasn't moved at all. I have a Shell Helix sticker on my windscreen so assume thats what it was filled with originally. I topped it up with the proper Castrol at the 1700k mark with 1 litre and all seems fine.
I did the warm it up to temp then give it some stick method to break it in and its running like a dream.

                • Done 12,000km now and total combined only have an oil lost of 2mm. Mine is 80% City driving 20% highway. 4 cross country trips.

I mean, we have heard countless oil issues but does it account for more than 10% of the cars ever produced by VAG group? There must be many owners without oil issues correct?

Only issue for mine is 4th gear while slowing down from 5000rpm, will encounter a loud "clank" crashing noise around 4000rpm. wonder if its a "end float" adjustment issue for its clutch issue?? Anyone?

                  • 2,700km in, and topped up 2.5L

This is horrible! I still have half of a 1L top up bottle I was given, once that is gone, its time to complain and get an oil consumption test done.

I am losing around 1L/1000km, anyone else getting these high numbers?

You won't get a consumption test until after you have done 5000km. VW will tell you that 1L/1000km when running in is normal.

Wow, if that is the case, I should just ask for a 5L bottle to last me until 5000km.

Read through the thread mate, there are some with worse consumption than you.

This is more likely a mechatronics issue, the clutches are self adjusting and unless they were belted with a hammer during assembly (unlikely) then the mechatronics probably is preselecting gear 3 which is a notoriously rattly gear. have a check on the net about DSG rattles, most of them stem from a dodgy 3rd gear selector valve.

Back on topic, I see where nomad is going because I too thought of tracking down the specific Castrol oil due to it being developed in conjunction with VAG etc. etc.

                              BUT.

The 2 times (factory and 15,000km service) that my car had the Castrol oil in it, it chewed through the oil around 1L/5000kms, maybe a little worse. However I have used Liqui Moly Top Tech 4200 on 2 fills now and have seen an oil consumption rate of around 1L/10,000kms.

I too agree that the car is noisier with the Castrol oil, not that I can remember what it sounds like anymore

Thanks Gavin, have not updated the DSG software to the latest version. The 1st gear simply shift up too soon and strains 2nd gear too much!
