Haha ! What a predicament! But, yeah, I want to plastidip something too. 'Something' being the operative word...
Yes I'm going to have a go at plasti-dipping the bottom grey plastic trims - just to see how they come up and if it will match in with the car a little better.
Will post some pics once I'm done. I was hoping to get to it tomorrow but not sure if it's going to get bumped to next weekend now.
Long story here. Was hoping that the car would be making 150+kwaw but looks like there's a bit more work to do here - either that or trying to find out why my car is not behaving. So at the moment we're trying to work out if it is a dyno / tune / hardware issue to explain the results that I've got to date.
Once it's all sorted I will post an update but at the moment it's still a work in progress (unfortunately).
Well didn't get to the plasti-dipping on the weekend.... instead got collared into pulling half the shed out to find Christmas decorations and then putting the Christmas tree up. And then put my millinery skills to use making alterations to karate uniforms amongst other things.
Oh well maybe next weekend.
Though tonight I've run a VCDS throttle body alignment as I've noticed the car is a bit jerky when coming off the throttle since the last time the ECU was out of the car. Will see if that fixes anything.
Well it appears that running the throttle body alignment seems to have done the trick. No jerks when I come off the throttle now - it's a lot smoother.
It should say "Basic Settings: OFF" on the top of your screen.
Click [ON/OFF/Next] to turn on Basic Settings.
It should now say "Basic Settings: ON" on the top of your screen. Once you do this you will see the top right display say ADP RUN. The TB adaptation is being done as soon as you switched basic settings on. You will see the values change and hear the TB cycle for the first few seconds then it will stop. Leave it in Basic Settings for about 30 seconds.
Click [ON/OFF/Next] to turn off Basic Settings.
It should now say "Basic Settings: OFF" on the top of your screen
Click the [Done, Go Back] button and you're all set.
Be sure not to touch the accelerator and make sure the engine is NOT running when you do this!
Well managed to get half the grey trims on the car plasti-dipped in matt black. Will get some photos up tomorrow as it was dark by the time I finished packing up.
A couple of pics of the black plasti-dipped plastics. Note only half the car has been done - front splitter is still in the stock grey.
Blacked out the reverse lights.... before the plasti-dip came back off. Actually quite like the look.
And plasti-dipped straight over the reverse park sensors without an issue. Will have to test to see if the sensitivity isn't effected - perhaps with something soft
You can see the contrast in this shot between the stock grey (on the front splitter) vs the rest of the car.
This was 4-5 light coats. You still do get some of the textured effect but the colour is a major improvement.
I taped right up to the plastics and when I took the tape/drop sheets off it did tear in a couple of places.
Spoke to a plasti-dip "pro" and he said to tape about an inch out and then peel off the overspray on the panel. Should tear cleanly along the edge.
Will try that on the other side...
To be honest when you look at the car with plasti-dip it really looks like a stock car and you wouldn't know it had been dipped. And then you walk around the other side that hasn't had the plasti-dip treatment and you see the "cheap" grey plastic mouldings stick out like a sore thumb in comparison.
Certainly for a couple of cans of plasti-dip and a few hours I think it's a good value mod
Damien, I know you have said nothing else to do ...... BUT ......
I had a ride in APR's Stg3+ Tiguan yesterday (310+kw atw) and OMG you still have plenty left to do !!!!!
I thought my Stg2 Tiguan with 160kw atw was quick, boy was I wrong! This thing is amazing and apart from the over the top (sorry Guy) stickers and low low ride you (and the seats sorry) could believe it came from the factory like that.
So, don't stop now, lots more to DO !!!! .....

Hahaha I know there's almost always more to do
Does the BT conversion on the APR Tig make the car a pain to drive in city traffic?
I'm just concerned (apart from the cost of course) that whacking a big turbo on is going to kill the responsiveness and end up with a laggy car that has OMG levels of boost and nothing below 3,500/4,000 RPM. I have heard that some of the Golf R's are like that.
Yes and difference between a manual 160kW car and 310kW DSG is going to be massive. I think you're almost better off having a DSG to do the gear changes with that much power/torque on tap.
Do you know what the 0-100 times are with the car - low 4's? I know they're still working on the shifting so it'll only get quicker.
I think I'd only look at going down the path of BT / brake upgrade if I was putting my car on the track whih I don't intend to do. So at this stage I'll give the $20,000 conversion a miss.
New tips look nice Tigger. Are they angle cut too? What brand are they if you don't mind me asking?
Yes they are angle cut. I'm not sure of the brand - these came from HM Headers in Melbourne. Same place as my exhaust.
The original tips were put on as a production prototype so now that the exhaust is staying on I've got them to send over some decent tips (the other tips were single wall and were starting to get quite discoloured). Getting these put on next week - will post up some shots once they're on.
