Another conundrum

A week or so ago, my MY13 TDI started reminding me of imminent service due, which seemed odd, since it's not due 'til late October on time and over 13000K on distance, and the time has been counting down daily.

Today it was down to 13600K/3 days.

At first I thought maybe the dealership hadn't reset the counter at the last service, so reset it by the method given in the manual — hold down the reset button on the MFD, turn ignition on, release and press again, switch off (a clumsy procedure that doesn't always work, BTW, but succeeded after several tries.)

The popup now reminds me that it's due in 15000K/3 days.

Checking the details in the centre display (which doesn't give you any options to change) shows that the change was indeed made (at least in part) — it now shows "oil change due in 15000K/365 days", which is what you'd expect to see following a reset.

Beneath that line there's another: "Volkswagen inspection due in 26400K/3 days" which, so far as I can see doesn't chime with any date in the car's history, but obviously is where the popup is getting the number of days.

Clearly something's not right — but what?

Before I start with VCDS, has anyone else encountered this one?

Yes, me. The reset doesn't do anything either for me. Says it resets it, but the Service Now! message just displays again. So I'm in the same boat as you. Next service is due in May.

@DV52 so you have poor oil quality as well.... my TDI has that same statement, I asked the dealer about it and they said it shouldn't because we use the recommended oil from VW factory.

My car also had a service fault message because it went 1000~k over the service but it still states on the MFD what the deal placed on the stupid sticker on the front window for the next service.

When my car was overdue for the service I found even at running temp I could not rev past 3k rpm in neutral, do any of you guys with this mismatch service message have the vehicle retarding your revs in effort to protect the engine until it has the service?

If I got this sort of message I would just take it back to my VW service centre instead of resetting it, even when my service was due and I was getting the annoying message and I wanted to clear it I didn't clear it with great restraint.

@zloybob - will that work for the all the annoying nag messages? I might give that a go when I have my VCDS laptop with me and some time.

Golf VII: Hi, I had the same niggling concern when I first saw the "poor oil quality" setting in the adaptation channel. But then I read VW's material about servicing and my concern was assuaged! This is how I understand it - there are apparently two types of service interval types used by VW; the normal Fixed Service Interval (FSI) and Extended Service Interval" (ESI). The adaptation channels are grouped for the two types in my earlier post.

ESI apparently will permit service intervals of up to 50,000 kms and/or two years, but to enable this facility, the car needs to have some extra smarts. To find-out whether your car has ESI capabilities you need to look for the PR code QGI on the vehicle data carrier sticker (see below)


Cars with this PR number have ability to make a special calculation of the oil condition based on oil temperature, oil level, elapsed time and also brake pad wear (and battery condition as well - I think). For cars that are capable of ESI, I understand that the entry in the adaptation channel that you made comment-on is an input the oil condition calculation (note that the begining of the descriptor for this channel is "ESI"). But this setting is not accessed for FSI because the only two determinants of when the next oil change is needed is distance travelled and elapsed time

So even if you change the setting on this channel, I'm fairly certain that not much (if anything) will happen. I've just left mine as-is because whilst the my car can measure stuff like oil temperature and brake pad wear, it doesn't have the special PR code and it can't do the oil condition calculation

PS: I'm not sure if ESI can be enabled with a VCDS cable (i.e. if the oil condition calculation is native to the mk7's software and it's just a matter of turning it on). Any comments from others in this regard would be welcomed

^^^^ Ben, on your NAR model SIA must be equal to FSI on our ROW vehicles. This is still a set maintenance interval based only on distance travelled and elapsed time - but yes both these variables can be changed using a VCDS cable

zloybob: I've said it before and I'll say-it again - you are a Russian genius (absolutely no doubt about it)! Thank you very much for the instructions

Tried your tweak this afternoon and so far - no nag screen on the SATNAV.


I tried reverting the settings back to the original coding values just to see what would happen and hey-presto immediately got the nag screen. I've left the coding to Byte 23 set to 00 to see if this setting upsets anything else in the infotainment system, but so far everything is working OK. Incidentally, for anyone else trying zloybob's tweak, you will need to re-establish your old FM radio settings, I lost RDS and TP (and consequently, no traffic reports). But it's a simple matter to re-instate both facilities- TMC works OK again.

Edit: 17 March 2015- after about a month since I implemented zloybob's tweak, I've not had the nag screen appear on the discover media screen and no unexpected impact on any other facility in the car. Fairly safe to say that the tweak works-thanks again zloybob

Edit_2: With the release of a label file for the 5F control module with VCDS software version 15.7.3, the long coding helper is a more expedient way of implementing this tweak - see screen shot below (remove tick from Bit 2)

Successfully tweaked the below on 2015 built Golf 103tsi highline with luxury pack n DAP2:
Air recirculation - automate
Traffic Information (TMC) activate
Fan Speed Indicator display on auto mode
Refuel Quantity activate
Instrument Guage Sweep activate
Blinkers cycles changed to 4
XDS - Expanded electronic differential lock -changed standard to strong - security code 20103
Removed nag messages on satnav - followed zloybob's tweek, thanks to DV52 for confirmation and zloybob for providing the coding.


No idea what this XDS mod would result in 103tsi highline drive. Just changed to see what happens.

Yep...you are correct Don, thanks I've aligned them now so my oil change is set for 5,000 miles and 250 days, and I have an inspection/service at 10,000 miles 365 days.

This is what I finally came up with. This aligns the 10,000 mile/1 year service with the service indicator and adding an oil change every 5,000 miles/250 days instead of 10,000/365 days.

On a side note... Don do you have any thoughts on what would cause the gauge sweep on my 15' Golf TDI S to be intermittent? I've tried resetting lighting, all settings, etc... with no luck. Seems that it only works sometimes regardless.

Ben: yours is the first time that I've heard of this problem. the word "intermittent" is certainly not something that you want to hear in a VCDS tweak problem! Generally, the tweak either works, or it doesn't. Are there any other odd symptoms that pertain to the instrument cluster? My guess (and it's a pure guess) is to revert the settings in Byte 1, Bit 0, and then try re-setting the Bit again - can't think of anything else!
