Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Actually, seeing as it is totally electronic as far as the floor shifter is concerned, it is something that should be able to be addressed with a software update...just swap the way the + and - work. This way, it would be an option that the user could change at will.

I'm sure it's only because I've never had a dsg before. It will become second nature the more I use it in manual..... I hope.

I agree. Ford have it right, Mitsubishi have it wrong, Mercedes used to have it left and right!!!

It should be pull back to change up and push to change down. At least the paddle shift is the right way round - if you have it.

I can see some logic in the way it is arranged because in a standard automatic transmission, to manually select a lower gear you pull the shift lever back, and to manually select a higher gear, you push the shift lever forward. This would appear to be why it has been chosen that way.

That said, it is the exact opposite to what one would expect for a "clutch-pedal-less" manual where you might expect to pull the lever back to go up a gear and push it forward to go down a gear, but then that's you and me (at least)

            • The story goes when Porsche made tip-tronic, they thought that the bimbo blonde women that would be purchasing it wouldn't understand the logic behind having it the correct way (back for up, forward for down), so they put it the wrong way (forward for up, back for down). Now we're stuck with having it the wrong way around... boo

              • I've always found the DSG up/down orientation on the GTI to make perfect sense to me.

Going down a gear mimics a 5-4 or 3-2 downshift which happens more often than say 6-5 or 4-3 on a track

                • pull back for up & forward for down is the right way for sequential boxes especially if ya racing goes with the flow of g-forces.

That logic makes no sense... because every other pair is then back to front

I thought I might be alone on this thought. If your pushed back in your seat you don't want to be fighting against g force. Not that g forces stop you from achieving this, it just doesn't feel free flowing and comfortable.

                      • I'm not sure about the MkVI but on my V GTI, there is a column of numbers showing the gears engaged on MFD, so intuitively, down means down too.

                        • if i had a road car with sequential (dsg) on the stick id be trying to see if i could get the solenoid/electronics changed around so it was how it should be. is the DSG left down & right up on the paddles?

                          • My 2 cents.
I find I change down multiple gears more than I do up Eg. 7th to 5th or 4th etc. For me flicking the stick downwards is an easier and quicker motion than pushing up. Handy if I'm dropping gears to achieve an instant boost of power to fit into a gap or something alike.

                            • I'm even worse off. When I drive my FPV I pull back to change up and push fwd to change down (the correct way), then when I get in the R its the other way around (the wrong way). Now i get confused when I switch between cars.......nice problem to have though and the paddle shift helps when I drive the the R but no such help in the FPV.

If there was a way to change the shift direction in the R I would be at the front of the stampeding crowd who would get this mod done

Well, it might just have to be a case of letting VW know.

The DSG transmission selector is not a physical connection to the gearbox. It is handled electronically, so VW should be able to swap things around by software. It would be great of all you had to do was take the selector out and swap two cables around, but doing it by software would be just as easy.

By all means leave it as it is by default, just give owners the ability to swap it around.
