Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Never understood why VW adds so much fuel use/economy info to the MFD screens in the GTI and R

On the diesel and non performance models I get it but I would much rather have truly useful info related to the engine and drivetrain on my GTI and R.

    • A Q for R owners

I never checked when we test drove the R

Does it have the small storage box by the drivers right knee ?

I made a replacement item for the one in our GTI

I am hoping it is the same ...

I don't understand what you don't understand . There are two readings for economy. Instant and average. That's not really excessive. Both are practically mandatory features in this day and age. The only thing that abufijli is confused about is that there are two trip meters....

        Yes it does.

          Yes it does.
In addition to fuel use screens (6) there are distance left, speed warning....

There is currently nothing actually useful in the MFD screens (wrt performance cars)

Thanks for the info on the storage area

You mean like one of these?

Even basic gauges like my ancient Scangauge ver 1 would be better than what is currently there

Oh well, wonder if the old Scangauge will still work in the R ....

There is oil temp and digital speed.
Anything you don't want you can turn off. Only thing I've turned off though is the speed warning

                • You can get rid of any of the MFI screens that you don't want (i.e. fuel info) from the Settings menu. For the amount of effort that car makers are trying to make their products greener, I guess they want everyone to know about it. I don't see that changing any time soon (besides track day cars, shed-built cars, etc).

Getting rid of them isn't a concern

Having something related to a performance turbo would be nice though.

There ain't much green about an R

I'll resort to my 5 year old Scangauge ...

                    • It's greener than an R32, isn't it?

I agree about the performance model having more performance info on it though.

                        LOL.

Depends on the use/abuse of the go pedal eh

                        • Hehe - I was comparing the 2.0l engine and the 3.2V6
I love my 118TSI since no matter how hard I try, I can't get my average fuel consumption above 7.6l/100km (atm it's at 7.2). And yet I can still reach any speed limit in 3rd gear with 4 more to spare (wrong thread, I know)

There is an instant fuel consumption. But there are TWO averages. Just the same as there are two travel times, and travel distances etc etc. You'll see what I mean when you look again
Yep, checked it out in the morning again and realised that if you press the "ok" button on the steering wheel you cycle between the two fuel consumption averages. Thanks for the help

There are three fuel consumption info screens on the R. Instant, current trip and overall fuel consumption. The trip fuel consumption wll reset after 2 hours of non use. This is the one I was stuck on and it was resetting every morning when I jumped in the car.

My fuel consumption is pretty bad at 17.1 litres. I hoping the will improve as the vehicle does more km's?? I have only done 500KM's so far.

Depends on what sort of driving you do. I've done 3,500kms and I can easily get 9L/100km on freeway driving. In the city I get about 15L/100km.When I first got the car in Jan I was always hitting 25L/100km cuz it was just too fun to drive! Then it went down to 12 and up to 30 when I got my APR tune. Now stabilising at 12 again
