Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    +1 for me too!
It seems that you can remove the covers around the selector and change the contacts or wires around... I have seen it done. You then need to swap the + / - label/light around too - which I don't think is a pretty job. Either way... it's not going to be covered by warranty if you mess something up.

Instead, I just got better DSG paddle shifters

Now i get confused when I switch between cars.......nice problem to have though and the paddle shift helps when I drive the the R but no such help in the FPV.

I suggest the same for the indicators and wipers..

+1 but don't start that one again. You know how our learned mod feels about that and of course is always right.

Add the handbrake to the list too. it should be on the driver's side of the console. Indicators. wipers, handbrake - my Forester has them all in the correct place and feels more intuitive and better for it compared to my Golf.

        • I like Euro-style left blinker& cruise/right wiper. It means I can keep my right hand on the wheel & use the left hand for gearchanges, indicating, flicking cruise on/off, advancing to the next song on the MP3 player & adjusting volume on the HU.

While it is nice that the wife has now bought a Mondeo with a similar Euro control layout, I didn't have a huge issue with adapting to her Auss/Jap style controls on her Commodore or the Camry she had for the last 2 weeks. Even she doesn't have a problem adapting.

Maybe I adapt quicker because I used to drive 10-20 unfamiliar cars a day?

          • Please don't get into it again.

Some members think that just because they're posting their rational opinion, that everyone else will change their opinion to match. When that didn't happen, some members then resorted to throwing personal insults at anyone who wasn't agreeing. There was already two attempts at this line of topic - once in one of the GTI or R threads, and then in its own separate topic, where people were warned to be nice... and it still turned nasty.

So just agree to disagree. Some people prefer it on the left, for the exact reason you mention in your first paragraph brad. Some people like it on the right because they can't see the rational/logic/practicality in what you're saying/are used to it being on the right.

And in one of my cars I can do both these things with different hands and keep one hand on the wheel all at the same time. Handy in traffic.

                    • Hey guys. So my 15K km for my Golf R is coming up. I had a look in the 15K km thread on the MK6 section but it didnt really answer the question I have, which is

What exactly is it that the dealers do for the 15K service? I had a look at the manual and it seems to say the same thing on every page?

                      Oil Change Service
                      Time or Performance dependent service
                      Additional Work
                      Haldex filter changed
                      Spark plug renewed
                      Fuel filter renewed
                      Toothed belt changed
                      Air filter insert changed
                      Brake fluid changed
                      Recommended repair

It says this checklist for each page in my service schedule. What exactly will be done for this 15K service? At the front of the book it says "every 30,000kms" "every 60,000km" do such and such and it has nothing regarding the first 15K...so what exactly is done on the 15K service?

Im also going to be taking it to an independent specialist, rather than going back to Barloworld where I picked up the car from. 2 questions

                      1) Does anyone have recommendations on independant specialists they go to?
                      2) Did you take your car back to dealer for 15K or specialist? Why?

                      • All the record pages are tick&flicks.

The 15,000km is an Oil Service - oil, filter, sump washer. check brake pads, check lights, check levels. Look just before the "every 30,000km" part.

I went back to the dealer because they were convenient & I was trying to build a long-term relation with them to make any warranty work go through easier. Waste of time as they handed back the franchise & didn't want to know me. I now go to a local independant that is 30% cheaper than the dealer.

                            Would 19x8.5 + 40 (245/??/19) fit a R?

245 tyres might rub. 235s should be OK. If you ordered your R with the 19"s, just swap over the rubber and try it out

My first service is due soon also. I am tossing up where to go.

I found the following at Richmond Motors who specialise in European cars, which gives a list of everything they do for all the service intervals.

Whether the same is done at the dealer???
