Just wanted to send kudos to kamold... Thanks for all your support and contributiona here. 5238 is working a charm in my unit, subjectively it feels more responsive and there are many small changes to menus, more than I've seen documented elsewhere.
If I've helped you, buy someone a beer.
Ideally me but if we never meet, pay it forward anyway.

Bit of a pain that the VW service centre isn't able to do the update of firmware for me when they have the car for servicing for the day. I'll get the firmware and POI data downloaded and organise a copy of the maps to come to me then. You've been a great help.
They wont do what you get here as its modified firmware Thanks to Kamold.
VW will only update it if there is a problem with the unit and even then it wont be the same as this.
You will have to buy the maps no copies on here.
You unit will be later than mine and it was a C with 04

Aah thanks - I didn't realise that the firmware was modified.
Maps- I've put a purchase through so hopefully that will come through relatively soon. I'll get everything downloaded in readiness for the weekend when I have the time to get the update process occurring.
Paying it forward... already did that last night - with some really smooth grandfather port!
Next question. I've downloaded and successfully flashed the newer firmware into my RNS-510. The mapping data disc I bought from JKU came and on following the instructions, it doesn't seem to do all that much after loading in the disc.
The system flashes up with a box saying that a navigation/mapping disc inserted and then doesn't do much from there. Is there something I'm meant to do so that the mapping data is copied into the system?

It should take about 15 mins to load the map and once it starts if you press eject a warning will come up telling you not to.
Cant remember if you have to do anything once you put the disk in.
You should hear the internal mechanism working as it reads the disk
You don't have to do anything. As hillbilly mentioned, if you press eject during the install process it will give you a warning and a progress bar. If you didn't see this it has already installed the maps.

Thanks folks. I think it's what Hillbilly mentioned - lost the last-known-location coordinates.
Went for a drive this morning and it identified then loaded up the maps.
The new firmware shows quite differently to the old one. New navigation takes a little longer to calculate a route than before. Aside from look and feel UI changes, still coming to grips with the overall changes that have come from the new firmware.
Thanks again for uploading the maps and the advice so far along the way in helping me get the update into the system. At least now the mapping data is showing my mother in law's place instead of me being driving on a map free area.
Thanks for all the advice and FW upgrade, Kamold. I have completed the upgrade and noticed the RDS on the radio UI. Are there any other nice little additions I should look for? One thing I did notice during the upgrade, it mentioned DAB. Does this make DAB available on the RNS where it is broadcast?
Thanks again for all the help.

DAB is European
Australia has DAB+ (or 2.0, if you like). Both also require a compliant tuner/receiver in the RNS. DAB+ might be in the very latest versions of the RNS but for those of us who already have an older model, it's a very expensive upgrade.
