Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. Can I go directly to 4020 from 2840 (it makes new partition in the HDD and format them)? I see in many posts that I must update first to 3810. As there are a lot of firmwares I don´t know which I must use (sw3810.iso or 3810a_noru.iso or FW_4020_70_20_5.ISO or FW_4020_a_70_25_5.ISO or 4020_nfb.iso or SWL_CD_4020_M3_EUR.iso ...). Can you help me?

    Thank you

It's not an A unit. Part numbers are different for Skoda. It's what would be called a C unit for vw.

      • It depends what version/Model unit you have.
I have always felt that installing new firmware in incremental steps is the safest option.

        • Thanks guys, I guess I'll stick with 3810 as it's working perfectly with my A version.

+1. I'm not sure the "enhancements" with the new firmware is enough for me to risk bricking my unit

I have 4020 on my A unit...no advantage at all. Best to stick with 3810. Well done.

Thank you (C HW50 SW2840). In secret menu in the option HDD status I see that it has a 40Gb HDD and 3 partition (is that possible with SW2840?)!!. So I think that I can directly update to 4020. What do you think?

                • I upgraded to the 38xx firmware and I can't load maps (put cd in, nothing happens, maps show up in settings as Aus/NZ but when I view navigation it doesn't show any terrain nor can it calculate paths). After about 10 minutes the entire unit locks up. Any ideas?

Didn't get a chance to test it thoroughly, but i rolled back to 2760 and nav seems to work again. Not sure if it still has the freezing problem. Will try again tonight.

                    • After you upgrade to 38xx you have to reload the maps.
It can take a while (up to 30 mins or so) and during that time the nav will be fairly unresponsive as its loading from the map disk rather than hard drive, so its slower. Also unless you have a satelitte signal (ie if you are in a garage) it wont be able to give a position, so will display a blank map.
Insert the map disk, wait a few mins and then press eject. It will warn you that its loading maps, and you can get a progress bar.

                      • Yep, i did that. even with satellites locked an my location found, the map wouldn't go to my location. regardless, the device froze up and became completely unresponsive after 10 minutes or so, so I'm guessing my device must be too old for 38xx firmware.

                        • Here's a handy tip for those with the secret menu enabled.

You can find both your GPS speed and your true Speedo speed, which is handy for long highway crusing.

To find your GPS Speed, go to the Secret Menu (Hold down setup for 20 seconds), then Navigation -> Matched Position, scroll down and you'll see the speed the GPS thinks you're doing. On my Polo this shows a 110 KM/hr when my MFD shows 117. I'd recommend having at least 4 sats/3D fix if you're relying on this to not get a ticket.

To find your true Speedo speed, go to the Secret Menu, then Navigation -> Dead reckoning, scroll down to CAN Speed.
This is what your car thinks it's going at. On my Polo this showed as 111KM/hr when my MFD shows 117. Non-standard tyres or wheels could mess this up though.

                          • Hi there folks,

Thanks for your help with all the firmware troubles. Have successfully upgraded from 2680 to 4120 today.

Does anyone have a copy of V5 maps? I can't seem to find any working links.

Happy to throw some beers in for your troubles. I'm based in Windsor in Melbourne. I also have a Micro-CAN Interface if anyone needed to borrow it.

                            Thanks,

                            Josh
