Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

You can copy MP3 and WMA files from a CD/DVD to the HDD, but you can't rip an audio CD to it.

        H Guys,
VW installed a new RNS in place of the MFD2 in my 07 Jetta. Details are:
        Part No: IT0035680C
        HW Version: H52
        SW Version: 2840
        Map Version: 7679
        HDD: Partitions: 3

Therefore, from this forum, I understand that I have a "C" version with 2840 firmware and Version 5 Map Data; is that correct?

I would like to update the firmware to 3810 at least and have a CD image disk ready to go. However, my RNS radio when running on battery times out after 30 mins (this is covered on page 6 or so of the RNS booklet in the car's manual.
Will this timing out interfere with a firmware upgrade?
        All help appreciated, Roger.

That timing issue won't be a problem when installing the firmware. That's time out is normal and only occurs when nothing is actually happening. You should make sure the battery has a decent charge on it before starting. It can take around an hour to run the updates in some instances. If it dies mid FW install, you will have problems. If you have a charger, connect it while doing to install to ensure that it won't be a problem.

Is there a reason you only want to install 3810 over 4020?

            Thanks John,

I got the impression from several VW forums that upgrades need to be done incrementaly, ie, 2xxx - 3xxx - 4xxx, or HDD partitioning became an issue. My 510 doesn't have a Personal poi capability and that is what I am after.

(Ok...what I posted here (originally) was (technically) incorrect. My bad.)

The only reason why it would need to be done incrementally is if the default 402x firmware image were used. This does not partition the hdd to the newer scheme.
If you use the one from the first post of this thread it has been modified to do a custom partition of the hdd which maximizes available space for music.

i thought i had a 30gb hdd with my columbus (rns510) - but after installing the custom 402x firmware, which i believe is 5/5/95 in terms of partition ratios, it shows i have a capacity of 33.50gb.
                  does it mean i have a 40gb?
                  but then again, 95% of 40gb is 38gb - so that can't b right?!??!
i've installed my maps (v5) already. still in the process of copying my music back.

prior to the firmware upgrade, i had 20gb capacity.

Yep it's a 40gb drive. Take into account file system overheads etc 38gb useable is about right.
Mine was a 40gb drive before I replaced it with a 64gb ssd.

Many thanks Johnc and Kamold for your excellent advice.
I now have an image disk of 4020, a recovery disk, and a Map V5 disk, and will try the upgrade as soon as the wife leaves the car alone for a few hours!

according to the skoda octavia rs brochure, the MY11 model get a "30GB hard drive".

not that i'm complaining about the 40gb hdd

Might just be a one off. Of course, HDDs are never exactly 30 or 40GB in size so maybe they rounded it off differently compared to everyone else.

Mine was a 40gb drive also. They switched them over to 40gb some time in 2010/2011.

kamold.. johnc.. good sirs you are truly legends

                              October 2011 build MY12 .:R
                              1T0 035 680 D with firmware version 3970 and V4 Aus maps
                              HW = H61
                              SW = 3970

Started with a mixture of just about everyone else's anomalies..
Had access to Version info by holding down Setup.. though no access to Testmenu (secret menu)
Had menu option for display speed limitation.. though no speed display on maps
unsure of VIM as DVDs won't play due to incorrect region coding?? (VCDS fix I know)

Saw the good work here and thought it may solve a few issues in one go.
So created the recovery CD, 4020 FW upgrade CD with 90/5/5 partitioning and V5 Aus map CD.

Firmware upgrade CD in.. as stated took nearly 1hr. CD ejected at the end and unit turned off. Turned back on, checked for testmenu.. located. Checked software version and HDD size and partitions.. all good. No maps. V5 maps CD in.. nothing.. radio still playing then lots of disc access and HDD access obviously copying maps over took about 25 mins could only tell by lack of HDD access. Ejected CD nor warnings.. checked version and maps all good. Only concern is personal poi's in menu is greyed out (anyone else confirm?)

Only thing left was to see if by chance DVDs and VIM were working.. No joy. Still need VCDS I guess.

Thanks to everyone for making it so easy

Personal POI need to be loaded with the right file path on a SD card.

Refer to Collections of POI's for further info.
