Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Agree I went from 3xxx to 5xxx from on here on a D LED radio and have zero noticeable differences. All the 'features' (except DAB+ obviously) on that list on the my-gti link above are present in 3xxx as far as I can tell - except RDS radio text - see my screenshot below.

NB: Re RDS radio text - The station names always worked even in 3xxx, but now you can replace the 6 station shortcut buttons on the screen with the name of the song playing (using the RDS Text button in the extras menu). It only works on 1 or 2 stations here in Melbourne anyway. RDS is not as widespread here as it is in Europe, where it is used to interrupt radio with important traffic messages and automatically sets the time on your wristwatch etc etc

I have the 6276 on the DAB+ unit in the other car and again no noticeable difference to 3xxx or 5xxx firmware (except RDS text as noted above).

The only thing is I have more space for mp3 obviously using these modified firmware on here because it shrinks the map partition. So yey.

    • Couple of features that might be worth it.

NEW Faster navigation and user interface
      NEW Automatic illumination control
      NEW Enhanced destination input

Although it says new Compass and I already have that so maybe I already have the faster nav & GUI too (in other words it isn't new with this firmware).

Isn't there always a chance of bricking it? I have an H version with 4120.

There is a slight chance. I used the 5xxx from this forum on a H and it worked super. Used a cheap-o CD-R media and IMGburn on a laptop CD burner - doesn't get any more dicey than that

        • I've just updated the original post. Bottom line is 5238 is suitable for all units, 6276 is ONLY for C14 units and above (SSD-based units).

There are minimal visual changes from 4000 to 5000 series (and liekwise from 3000 series), but in most cases there are some performance tweaks which may make your unit a little more responsive in some situations.

          • Hi all

Just as an advisory, I have a B version unit with HW version H04 that had never been updated (was running 1100). I went at first to 3810 and it worked fine (becoming a D unit in the process as expected). I then tried 5269. It installed fine and ran for about a day, with maps etc installed. Then one start up it just got caught in a loop on the welcome screen, resetting and rebooting constantly. Reverting back to 3810 cured it and it's now working fine again. I wonder if this was because 6269 was one step too far or whether it's better to just stick to 3810 as a safe option on an early unit...

Thread has just been updated so 5238 is the latest for an RNS510 the other is for a different version AFAIK.

It DOESNT actually become a D unit either

              • I'd highly recommend to stay away from 5274, including the 'updated' 5274. It will randomly go into a reboot loop. 5269 seems to be the highest (safest) firmware for a pre-C14 unit.

                • I just went from 4120 to 5238 and (from my perspective) there's a noticeable improvement in responsiveness. Visually.. yeah, looks the same. This is coming from a H revision RNS.

Installation was pretty standard (~1 hour), although it did take a bit longer than expected for the GPS to work out where it was again, hah.

                  • G'day. Someone should update the first post in this thread, the section about boot logos. JohnC has left the community and his links do not work anymore in his logo post.

I am talking about step no. 5 in the Installation Instructions:
                    5. Consider a custom load screen, see JohnC's great work here: RNS-510 Custom Boot Screens

Instead, people should use this website and create their own logos or just download existing logos and the site will convert them to iso.
Create your own custom bootlogo for RNS510

                      • Just updated the firmware to 5238 from 4120.
I didn't need to load the V8 maps again after the update, also all my music stayed on the HDD and POIs.
                        Is this normal?

Plus I couldn't update my boot screen, it shows downgrade error message at the end of the update process. I used the link above to create the iso.

Turn unit on. Wait until all modules are working.
Press these 3 buttons at the same time: 1. Eject. 2. Setup & 3. "Info/Mic" (next to "eject"). Unit will reboot.
After re-booting has completed...insert your disc with new splashscreen. Wait for 2 minutes. Voila.

If you were already running the same custom partitions it won't delete maps or music.

                              • Hi guys

Just a quick question on the RNS 510 on my PAssat CC MY12 with the following details

                                Delivert PArt Number 1T0035680D
                                HW-VErsion H55
                                DW Version 3970
                                Map Version HDD 7679

How do I go about upgrading this unit. I don't have any maps CD. Also what will be the benefits of upgrading the firmware.
