Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • So I finally got my injector issue sorted, thought I should do a bit of write up

    PART 1
Early November last year I got a set of non-calibrated PD130/150 injectors off eBay and can't find anyone locally can do the calibration so
So I thought I'll give it a go(yeah with 120,000s-of-psi of injecting pressure just put them in uncalibrated)
While the workshop is working on it, they found the hardened casing on some of the cam lobes are worn through and so as some tappets
I searched on the net and looks like it's quite a common fault on the PD engines
So I had to order in the new cam and seal to put in
Then they changed the rocker cover and gasket to fix the oil seeping issue
Got the car back with all the work done after over a week
Load the tune and now it drive like it's in limp mode
No wheel spins whatsoever no matter how I try
Went through all the diagnosis with data logging and found out the injectors are way out of balance
So my advice? Don't put uncalibrated injectors into you PD engines!!!
With all the coins spent and got results like this, I got slack

    PART 2
Driving a limp-mode like car is not so funny, the power was so flat
There was an opportunity that I can access a DynoDynamic machine, so I did some power runs
The peak power on the highest power run was 87 HP(what?)
So I'm basically running below stock level??
Got pissed and order a set of fully reconditioned and calibrated PD130/150 injectors from the Darksides, also chuck a set of PD150 head bolts in the cart while I place the order[emoji14]
Now the car is in for the injectors for a second time
Everything went well until they put the rocker cover back with new gasket
They found it's leak badly at one corner, oil just pouring out from there
Then they checked the cover on a flat and it's wobbly, got a 4mm lift at the leaking corner
So rocker cover #3 is in, and I got the car back yesterday
All I could say is nothing, because I was busy at laughing
Almost break my neck at my first take off, spins the KU19s all through the 3rd
Now I need some stickier rubber

Now you've piqued my interest! TBH I hadn't heard of custom0code until now, but looks the goods! How would a Wollongongian go about getting a stage 1 tune from you Gavin?

PS Forgot to mention I also changed the gearshift boot for a lovely black leather one; say no to cheap-looking vinyl!!!

You need to do more reading of the Polo section. C-C has been in Australia since I arrived in 2006. I don't spend millions on advertising though, like other tuners do. Lower overheads means better value, I like to think.

There's nothing wrong with APRs products at all but do you need the switching etc? My own S3 came with APR before I swapped it out. I set it to the stock map once. My wife complained it felt slow. So back to tuned....

If you can't get 98, you can use 95 if you have to, the ECU will look after itself. There will be reduced power obviously but how often do you drive somewhere where you can't get 98 anyway?

I can bench flash your ECU if you are willing to ship it to me. I need to know that your car is well serviced. The tunes are well tested by lots of guys on the forum, so I know any drama you had after the flash would be hardware related.

Common failures are coilpacks. Which are pretty cheap and were subject to a VW recall.

Sparkplugs often give grief and in my mind can contribute to coilpack failure. Again relatively cheap to eliminate as a cause. I usually recommend fitting NGK BKR7E and tighten the factory gap to 30 thou.

My theory being if you know they don't last forever, you'll probably be more inclined to inspect and/or replace them. Platinum ones do last longer but don't really have a replacement interval.

Diverter valves can sometimes split, the VW ones are good enough on even modified engines. No real need to spend $300 on a turbosmart or something. I used to sell Forge-a -ikes but don't bother any more. Even the rip offs were being ripped off.

If you can't be without the car for a few days, I have a tuned ECU with no immobiliser that you can try out. Just needs swapping with yours and off you go.

The exact same software would come back to you.

Hit me up if you have more questions.

There's a good chance I'll be in Campbelltown end of next week at CamdenGTI. I can promise a more exciting drive home if you come up!!
No need to pull your ECU out either. I can just flash it through the OBD as normal.

That sounds like a plan! Let me know when you'll be there once confirmed and I'll shuffle my schedule to suit.

I'll probably fly down during next thursday and leave Saturday arvo. Do you plan any further modifications? I have Phase 2 tunes for downpipes and also Secondary Air Delete tunes too.

I'd also recommend a dog bone insert.

If you haven't looked yet, have a read of my cheapy GTI thread for some inspiration and what not to do.

Ok; I'm free Thursday until 3pm, Friday after 4:30, and after 1pm Saturday. Let me know when you've confirmed your arrival time and we can try to sort something out.

I was planning on stopping at phase 1, plus maybe adding a TIP and A PD160 down the track; don't want to go too far from stock, and I think with the suspension mods I've done that should be plenty enough fun for a daily drive!

I have an APR mount which isn't yet installed (came with the car) so maybe the guys at Camden can fit it whilst you do the flash?

                        Cheers,

                        Steve

                        • Finally have confirmation on what's wrong with my Polo after a checkover today... Turbo bearings are going, and it's rubbing/rattling.

Currently summing up the cost of replacing the turbo, to selling the car

Anyone know what the specs of the K03 turbo are to aide in my search? Are they all made equal, or best to track one down that came from the correct era Polo 1.8t engine?

That's bad news mate. It's a K03s you need to look for. If you bought a brand new turbo and paid for fitting. It should be doable under 2k or there abouts.

You can get secondhand turbos off ebay under $500 delivered.

Hi Gavin, I thought it was just the Cup edition that had the K03s, with the regular GTI running the K03 - I take it I've got that wrong?
