Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

      • Not polo related but today I test drove a Gen 1 Mazda 3 MPS as a bigger, second car to replace my partners current car. She wanted something bigger, manual and something with some grunt (she's addicted to the extra power from driving the polo). It was all stock other then a HD clutch and a cutback exhaust.

Overall was a great feeling car, felt solid and plenty of go. First and second felt slightly slower then the polo but 3rd (which is when they hit full boost) felt awesome. Definitely a strong contender for the new upgrade.

A mate had the first (and second) generation 3 MPS. The first generation 3 and 6 both suffer for same issue which results in blowing oil when idling, and it's a costly fix. He loved the car, though was like a $4k fix at 70,000kms, so he found it better to trade the car for a new one, which apparently has resolved that issue, rather than fix it, along with being due to timing belt and brakes. Probably not a cheaper fix, but suited his circumstances. They are a very nice car and go like the clappers, just do some research into common issues, apparently the oil one is quite common. By all accounts, if you can stretch to the 2nd gen MPS, that may be a better buy - though the original is arguably better looking.

Thanks for the info Sean! Ive looked into a few of the issues with them, have read about the one you mentioned, aswell as apparently when tuned the gearboxes can become a weak point and the engine mounts aren't much better. Like you say, varies from car to car but those are the main ones I've heard about.

The budget won't stretch to a 2nd Gen but I do prefer the 1st Gen looks anyways. Although I thought its kind of an odd setup that the Gen 1 models don't have a Bonnet scoop but have a top mount intercooler, air flow to the intercooler looks like it would minimised

Anyway nothing in set in stone, will see what happens in the near future with the search

Impressive improvement, but takes sometime to get used to how short the side way throw is

                • There's a guy here in Brissy looking for a Forge QS Michael.

Also, in a short while I'll be putting in the stiffer rear springs in preparation for HL next weekend. My dentist will be pleased!!

                  • Gave the Polo some pre happy laps loving before next weekend. Changed the engine oil, oil filter, fuel filter and checked wheels bolt tensions. Little did I know the fuel filter had never been changed, and after 146k kms, it had seen better days.

Heres a pic of what came out! You'd almost mistake it for old engine oil! Thanks to Gav for ordering me in one this week when getting ahold of a oil filter as well

                    • Sorry to bring this up again. But I'm pretty sure the polo GTI is meant to have the remote control windows as shown in the image.

And perhaps a TimeAttack hey Gavin...

I can't make the one on 2nd May, 1st wedding anniversary. The wife wasn't amused when I asked if we can push it back a weekend...

                        • Can you not make it the week before instead? I'd like to do something with more focus than hl. But I have no helmet and a heap of other expensive reasons not to go harder.

                          • Been busy on my little beastie!

2 weeks ago I fitted a GFB diverter valve; definitely noticed an improvement in throttle response.

Last week, fitted Koni fsd shocks and Eibach pro springs; definitely sharper cornering, but overall ride comfort is very similar, if not slightly better.

On the weekend, replaced the front brake discs; the last owner had replaced the pads but the discs were heavily lipped, so on with some new ones. Thought I'd fix a leak in the boot where water was running in from the side of the hatch; only solved part of the problem, so kept looking, and realised the left rear light assembly hadn't been put in properly, so fixed that as well; hopefully now no more fishtank under the spare tyre!

My VW jack shat itself (ie stripped completely) when I tried to lift the car for the second disc swap; so yesterday bought a new jack.

Whilst at it, I disassembled the LHS wing mirror, removed and fixed a crack in the lower indicator window, then replaced.

Today I replaced a blown front parking bulb (that was fun!), and then treated the rear bumper, side skirts, and lower grille with Mothers Naturally black, definitely looks better!

Now I just need a RSB, and for APR to go on sale so I can get a tune!

Or Go with Custom-Code for $799 and have money in your pocket? To pay for the roll bar.
