Shame you're not in Melbourne, I could have done it for you, once you have done it once, its not that hard , and having a VCDS cable is optional realistically if you dont care about voice control (which after having had it... is a waste... a mute button is by far more useful )

If you're in need of any 6n1 parts, odds are that I am going to have them (dismantling 2 at the moment)

I wanted to do it and might do it but I just kinda like having not to worry about it really. Plus I don't want to stuff anything up and don't have any of the trim tools.

I wanna be able to put it behind the the unit as well not under the seat.

You do need to use VCDS to add the Phone screen to the MFD though.

DIY install is not hard. Just set aside enough time and make sure you have the right tools in advance to make things easier. If you can program a PVR to record then you should have no problem following the installation instructions). If you don't have a trim tool just wrap a soft thin cloth around a butter knife or you could even get the trim off with just your fingers in some cases. Storing behind the AC controls is easier (less time consuming) than running the cable under the seat.

My 5K0 9W7 unit arrived at work this week (while I was at home enjoying my loooong weekend, sigh). Had a look at the harness during lunch to make sure all the wires were there and to try and work out what went wrong last time (voice control doesn't work due to incorrect wiring). Based on a lot more forum posts on the subject and using my own home grown intellect rather than blindly following the old installation guide I reckon I've worked it out.

The harness arrives looking like below from CarSystems.pl (except I've removed the microphone cable already), and the old instructions I had said to connect those two cables on the left if using the RNS510 so that voice control would work.

        ^ Incorrect

However if you visualise and follow the signal path of audio (a handy skill for wiring up your home theatre components) coming from the microphone cable in this configuration you'll see it goes directly to the BT unit (allowing you to talk to people when calling them) but not to the RNS510 (which you've just connected to itself).

So after visualising the signal and recalling an old post in the massive Bluetooth thread highlighting why some BT units don't allow voice control on the RNS510 I've come up with this approach, which I assume will work fine, but remains untested until I fit the unit.

Hope this helps. I'm actually thinking of making a big FAQ thread that has all the important info for all sorts of members regarding media and BT so that we don't have to keep hunting for said info in other threads elongated by new versions of these products being released and new members asking questions. That'll take some time though.

Sounds like a pretty good write up to me Ryan. When are you going to install, I might try and tackle it myself and pop in to VW and get it coded.

Now I have to go home and check to see if I have all the right cables as well.... Damn Exams periods I've had no time what so ever.

Maybe this Saturday arvo or on a Wednesday, depends on the weather forecast.

Here's a pic of the 5K0 module, which I expect to show BT Audio ID3 tags and allow track-skipping from the HU and MFSW.

The feature of track skipping and showing song names on the unit should work with all versions of the RCD510 right? Because I have a fairly early version of the RCD510 without the reverse camera plug. Think it was taken out of a MK5 golf. I was planning on maybe plugging my RCD510 into my friends golf who has an RNS with all the bluetooth fully set up. It wouldnt mess up his settings afterwards right when we plug his RNS back in?

Hmmm, just make sure you know the security code for both units.

Interesting to note the different software versions on the 7P6 v 5K0 versions:

                  Software version 2730 (pontif)

Software version 2902 (me). I guess the sellers who said the 7P6's are the newest unit don't know what they're on about.

I installed my unit this arvo and am pretty happy with the outcome. I was only one or two items away from a perfect result:

                  * Managed to make sense of the mess of wires behind my RNS510 - Check
                  * Swapped old 9W3 BT Unit and old harness with new version - Check
                  * Plugged microphone in correctly this time as per previous post so that RNS510 voice control works - Check
                  * Phone connected to new BT unit, downloaded address book again, setup speed dials - Check
                  * Can skip tracks using the steering wheel or HU - Check
                  * ID3 tags displayed on RNS510 and MFD - Check (only when using default Android Music app, nothing shown when using PowerAmp or TuneIn Radio. Have requested this feature on the PowerAmp forums, but I can use the default player in the meantime).
                  * Flatten the battery while testing everything - Check
                  * Get car started and drive around for 10 mins - Check

                  My two outstanding items are:
                  * 1st speed dial preset on RNS510 Phone screen is Voice Mailbox. I don't use voicemail on my phone (left messages are converted to text and sent as SMS), so I want to use this for another contact like I could with 9W3. Has anyone figured this out yet?

                  * Still couldn't fix the AUX-IN jack. I double checked all of the harnesses and quad lock connectors (QLC) to make sure all wires were being passed through. I assume I have the AUX-IN 12-pin cable plugged into the correct side of the quadlock connector. So perhaps this is a coding issue then, or the MDI harness replaces the AUX wire signal with its own input? If anyone works on their car and has working AUX and MDI I'd be interested to see photos of your harness and VCDS screenshots.

Also took some photos for you:

Fig 1: Remove 4x T20 screws for RNS510, and 4x T20 screws for climate control.

Fig 2: Pull the climate controls out a tad and the old 9W3 BT unit is revealed, surrounded in foam to prevent vibrations. Rotate and slide out, then disconnect BT.

Fig 3: Some tricky locks on most of those cables to make removing them just that little bit harder (easier if you've done it before). My reverse camera video cable was short, making it even harder for me to get my hand in there. Given that that's the most recent part I installed I'm surprised I didn't give myself more room, unless the cable wasn't long enough. to start with.

Fig 4: Photo of the labels for future reference. Purchased this one nearly 2 years ago now. Now that I actually look at the label I can see the AUX pins (1, 2, and 7). That's where my AUX-IN cable is connected (3 harnesses away though).

Fig 5: Ummmm, which witch is which again? :p One is the original car connector, one is the MDI retrofit harness that I added, and another is for the BT.

Fig 6: Got everything connected and hid the other two harnesses below the bracket that the HU rests on (otherwise you won't be able to push it back far enough). Original car QLC plugs into MDI QLC plugs into BT QLC plugs into the RNS510. I had the MDI and BT harnesses around the other way before since my old 9W3 BT harness didn't have as many wires passing through).

Fig 7: Connect everything back up for testing, don't screw in until you know everything works. I had no audio going to the speakers first time, which had me confused as to what I couldn't connected incorrectly. As I went to unplug a QLC in the chain I heard another click, one of the connectors in that QLC must've popped out, worked fine after that.

Fig 8: Finding my phone. Didn't ask for a PIN which was strange/interesting.

Fig 9: Verify ID3 tags are displayed and track skipping works. Brilliant. 5K0___ is the unit you want, to reconfirm.

Replace screws (be careful when trying to insert the side screws for the climate controls, easy to drop them) and replace trim. Go for a drive if you've been using the accessories/DRLs for ~1 hour to make sure you don't flatten the battery. Even when I turned my light switch to off there were still some lights on (parkers or DRL).

Hehe, I had to test the track skipping feature a few times to get a decent song up before taking the photo. While it does show the song length it doesn't show track progress, no big deal for me.

btw if quoting a loooong post it's usually a good idea to delete the bits you're not referring to so we don't have to scroll for miles

So I installed the Bluetooth today but got some issues. Firstly I have no idea how to get the side A pillar, I tried with brute force and just gave up it won't move. So for now my mic is hanging under steer wheel. Secondly the mic isn't working I can hear people talking to me but they can't hear me. Do I need coding so this can work or have I stuffed up somewhere?

Did you take any photos of your wiring? There is some coding that is also needed. Check the Official VWW VCDS thread.

Pry off the airbag clip in the A pillar to reveal a screw that needs to come out. I just tucked the wire in without removing any of those upper trim pieces anyway.

Yeah this is on a polo so the airbag trick doesn't apply. Also someone mentioned that because mine is a RCD510 the mic PINs need to be adjusted. Not sure if it's a coding thing.

My issue is getting the cable up under steering wheel to the side pillar and then feeding it through. I have no idea where the Cale comes up?
