As a follow up, seeing as there is a severe lack of reading-of-owner's manuals that has afflicted 6R polo owners, the proceedure to check your oil is to ensure the engine has been operating at it's normal operating temperature (coolant at 90 degrees, oil 80-100 degrees), park the car on a level surface and wait a few minutes for the oil to drain back into the sump.
After 3-5 mins, then check your dipstick. If you are checking it when it's cold, you will get an incorrect reading.
