So after 3 months and 2500km since my engine rebuild, my engine oil was1/4 down the dip stick. 250ml topped up and full again. I think I can live with 1L/10,000km, much better than the 1L/1,000km I was getting before the engine rebuild.

Fingers crossed it doesn't get worse.

2100km on mine and the oil level has just come down to the top of the cross hatch area. The oil level when 'delivered' was about 4mm above the cross hatch area and just below the flange. Would this be considered overfilled from new?

Yes, over-filled. It should be about 2mm below the top of the x-hatched section with 3.6L in. Maybe some garages are getting confused with TSI engines and putting 3.9L in.

either way, there is usually a photo/sketch in the owners manual showing levels A (max fill); B (safe area) & C (minimum level).

Yes it's supposed to be slightly above that middle xxxxxx area.

2mm above is about what the manual shows and I expect that 2mm over that recommended level is not a real big deal.

Good to know the oil capacity (3.6litres) of the GTI though. I've been through the manual several times and could not find it (the oil capacity).

I stand corrected. A couple of guys on Briskoda with the same engine reckon they changed the oil and refilled with exactly 3.6L to just below the top of the cross-hatching. Maybe the Polo GTI is slightly different. As long as you don't go and add half a litre now, a couple of mm won't make much difference.

Engine oil capacities are approximate, so if someone puts 100ml more oil than others to get the oil level to the full mark on the dipstick, I wouldn't stress too much about it.

Have a look at my avatar, that will show you the marks. Full is the bottom of the top, sausage shaped orange bulb on the dipstick.

MY 13.5 CTHE engine polo GTI, I've had it a week and driven it 500 km (a few longer trips to go rock climbing recently). Checked the oil this morning and it hasn't gone down from a few mm above the cross-hatched area since new, it does look ever so slightly darker than when new now but it used to look almost like water. I've been fairly careful with it, letting it warm up before giving it some power and keeping the RPM down most of the time, hopefully things will stay as good as they are now.

Just over 7000km's and another 200ml went in so total of around 1.2L.

Letting the missus do all the driving

Jinxed myself... Polo gti just hit 3100kms and oil top up light has come on... Taking it to vw tomorrow

Have you been checking the oil? I notice if i gota top up between 200-300ml it idles louder or maybe just placebo

Nah i havent been checking it but yeah after the guys at vw topped it up. It idles louder!

But its kinda worrying when i heard they say it lost a whole heap of oil (dunno if i heard it right but i did hear him say 1.5 litres??) over the 3100kms.. So they told me to come back after 1000kms.. And if it has dropped 0.5 litres in that time, ill have to bring it in and im not sure what goes on from there...
