It's only been 3000km since rebuild. Lets see how she goes for this year. My Polo was burning 1L/1000km before the rebuild so I'm pretty happy with how it is now. $15 worth of top up oil a year. Mobil 1 esp 5w-30 is cheap.
Had my first issue with the engine this week (ODO-7500km) , on 3 separate occasions in 2 days i had a red 'Low oil pressure' warning flash up on the dash. Two out of the 3 times this happened at exactly the same space of road on different days. I checked the oil and there doesn't seem to be much in there, which is extremely worrying. It also seems very dark in colour which isn't encouraging.
I would have thought if the oil level was low, the oil light would have come on beforehand.
Will take it in to VW north shore tomorrow to be looked at.
Hi, I have a MY13 Polo GTI purchased in Sept 2012 and have the oil burning problem as well. First oil consumption test done a couple of months ago it used 700ml in just under 1000kms. Oil breather mod was done but still burning oil at an alarming rate and blowing smoke at low rpm. Booked in tomorrow to see what can be done. Advised that a second oil consumption test will probably need to be done before any major engine work. Not Happy. How can VW have been selling cars with the crap CAVE engine over a year after owners were reporting such a major fault. I contacted VW Australia to register my complaint and asked them this question. Still waiting for them to get back to me. Anyone with this problem been able to reject the car and get their money back?
Zakarados i think it was in the process of this and finally got the car repaired properly but what you will find is that if you have a MY13, it's not a CAVE my friend, it's a CTHE motor.
Oh, it's been longer than a year too, ever since the inception of the mk6 golf, there have been oil issues with this motor.

Hi Nile, I had never ending dramas with my MY12.5 pGTi for the first 6 months. Burning 1L/1000km, I never actually did a consumption test, but I had 3 break downs due to failing spark plugs in my fourth cylinder and ended up getting my engine rebuilt. My best advise is, complain, be firm but not aggressive and let them do what they have to do. Write a letter to the service manager of the service centre and see what happens.
After 6 months or so with a lemon, I finally have lemonade!

I definitely have the CAVE motor in my MY13, probably one of the last ones. Wish it was the CTHE in my car as that seems to be less prone to burning oil.
Thanks for the advice too Zakarados. I suspect it may need an engine rebuild but will keep you all posted. Then of course I have the dilemma of whether to keep the car or get rid of it.

Sounds like they're screwing you to be honest. I've heard of plenty of people who change their oil at 5k or 7.5k kms because they believe it's good for the engine and they've had no troubles dealership wise. Probably attempting to scare you from going anywhere but VW for servicing.

Sounds like they are trying to scare you and position themselves to get out of a an costly warranty job. There are two things I will point out. I was told by a specialist VW mechanic that VW use a oil with a special coloured dye in it so that they can tell if you used a different oil so ask them for a free bottle of oil. After owning my twincharger for 12k now and 3 consumption tests later I would recommend checking the oil every 500km yourself and then telling them that you will be in there the next morning for a top up via email and copy VW in for there records. As said before by others I would not recommend being aggressive with your dealer. Just go with the flow and keep on their backs. This will give you the best results.

Some use castrol oils while some use valvoline
Oil leaks maybe
They also did the VW "Peace of Mind" check and everything came up fine.
Hopefully this fixes my oil consumption issues??? For the first 27000km I never had a problem, but from there, I've been filling up a litre every 1500-2000km.
