Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

A word of caution, as Diesel_vert has pointed out, some oil is marketted with different names or specs in different regions, so you should always check the label of the local bottle to ensure it has the VAG 504.00/507.00 certification.

I and several others for instance use Liqui-Moly TOP TEC 4200 | 5W-30 (scroll down that page to it) which is both Germany made and engineered. It's around $80 for 5L from several places such as Autobarn, MotorActive, and even some of the VAG specialists, such as European Autotech.

Anyway... check the other sub forum, and see what others have been purchasing recently
I ordered 5L of the Liqui Moly oil from Motor Active.

I will be doing an oil change this weekend. Doesn't feel right not doing an oil change at 7500kms.

    • Make sure you also change the oil filter with the specific OEM part. You can buy them and a sump plug from your VW dealer's parts office for relatively cheap (cheaper than you'll import a single filter and sump plug anyway).

...and, if you buy somewhere else than from the dealer, check that the filter is made in Germany. I saw some filters (not at the dealer) the same brand as OEM sold by VW, but they were made in China.

Thought it may have been the rings, but maybe that will come later...

I'd like to know why there is such an adverse reaction to things made in china because there are a hell-of-a-lot of problems that are in VWs and majority of those major problems come from the german built parts (1.4 twincharged engine, DSG gearboxes, mechatronics units etc) so why the hating of china?

People forget that Japanese product wouldn't be touched with a 10 foot pole many years ago, now people use them as a benchmark for reliability (bar when accountants get involved, i.e. Toyota). Yeah, there is a lot of crap coming out of china but there is also some awesome stuff. I think we will all find that majority of the interior plastics on these cars are coming out of chinese based factories because injection moulding is so cheap over there yet the quality of some of the stuff I see here FAR surpases anything made locally.

As a parting comment, for something to claim to be "made in ........" country, only 7% of the manufacture of that part has to occur in said country under UN ECE regulations so if something is "made in germany", how much of that part is actually made there and how much is just assembled........

                • Mainly because the filters for our cars are made in Germany. So filters made in China are either:
                  1) Counterfeit
                  2) Not intended for our cars

There is a good reason why the German manufacturers' China factories only build cars for the China market (we're not just talking VW here).
But China's issues are not the topic of this thread. Transporter's advice is sound, if you value the warranty on your engine

For sure, but like I said, made in Germany? It only requires 7% of the work to produce the finished part to be done in that country to constitute wearing that label

Point 1 is a definite possibility, I've seen numerous counterfeit parts that have come from places like China but:-
Point 2 "Made in Germany" may not necessarily mean made in Germany in the quite the same way as we might expect.

Anyone who thinks his German made car is 100% German may be disappointed. I'm aware of German component manufacturers that supply the OE market that have factories in China (and other asian countries) and do export components back to Germany. Whilst I know this goes on, I don't know categorically whether those components end up in cars or are solely sold as replacement parts. And also, VAG don't make their own filters do they?

                        • My car has been in 3 days so far getting the engine fixed so it stops burning huge amounts of oil. So far they have dismantled the engine, gotten the new parts out to fix the damn thing only to realise that not all the parts they ordered have arrived

                          wow...all I have to say.

                              • What i don't like reading is this car hasn't even reached it's first year from touching tarmac and already it's having work like this done.

Personally from experience it reminds me of the old mans Beemer 2009 car with a lot of eletrical faults in the first year, followed by high oil consumption :/
