It was a sunday called Vw Sutherland told me to go buy oil and top up which i did,1L..forgot about problem...

Had oil and filter changed by liscenced mechanic at 5500km...

At 8500km oil light on again ...i know should have checked..went to Vw Sutherland, and all they could tell me was i shouldnt have changed the oil and have probaly voided my warranty..i told them they were crazy..oil consumption test starts..finished today..used 600ml in 1000km..out of vw spec ..but there telling me now that cause i had the oil changed is why it is using so much oil and that i need reciepts for my oil!?! i told them they were insane castrol edge 5w 30 BTW..

In short i need anwsers and help!! i am already in talks with Rockdale Vw who much more polite and willing to help me with the problem rather than dance around it like the fools at Sutherland Vw....Sorry for the long post ,but i just thought everone needs to know to stay clear of Vw sutherland as the after sales service is ridicluous!!!
I will try to make this quick.

VW Sutherland is owned by the McGarth group which runs McGarth Holden, Nissan & VW at Sutherland as will as VW Liverpool which has a poor rep as well.

VW Rockdale is owned by the Stewart Auto group which runs Stewart Toyota Rockdale and Sutherland as well as Rockdale Skoda & Kia.

I'm sure both groups have more yards then that under their control but we are just talking local for now. Although I wouldn't call the Stewart group perfect. I would at least call them reasonable to deal with if you have a complaint and you are firm but polite.

Volkswagen requires you to use oils that are approved to the relevant VW oil standard, such as 502.00, 505.00, 504.00, 507.00, and so on.

Note that Volkswagen does not recommended a specific viscosity grade.

For petrol vehicles on the Time & Distance service regime (fixed 15 000 km or 12 month intervals), you may use either 502.00 or 504.00.

504.00 is only compulsory for petrol vehicles on the LongLife service regime (variable intervals of between 15 000 km or 12 month to 30 000 km or 24 month intervals, as determined by the onboard computer). This type of service regime is not relevant for Australian delivered vehicles.

The theory is that low or mid-SAPS oils, such as 504.00/507.00 oils, reduces the rate of build-up on the inlet valves in direct-injection petrol engines (as opposed to full-SAPS oils).

Whether that is borne out in practice, well...

Anyway, although this is a concern that applies to many direct-injection petrol engines across the board, I believe this is a separate issue and not related to the oil consumption issues suffered by vehicles made by the VW group.

      • Got a yellow oil warning light last week. Had just moved all of 10 meters out of the driveway.
        Stopped and topped up... Again.

This prompted me to (finally) book the car in for yet another consumption test.

Over 36000 km, I have now used 11l of oil, plus the oil used at each service.

Dealer here is surprisingly reasonable, listening to my concerns and running this 3rd test (each time before, up to 15000km, the result was considered borderline, but within spec).

Also noted that the clutches seem to be slipping again. About 18000km after my first clutches were replaced.. At 19000km.... I have a good dealer, who actually checked them and confirmed they were out of spec, so 2nd clutch replacement to be done under warranty, when I return in 1000 km. I wonder whether they will have upgraded the material by now? Or can I expect the same in another 18000km, once out of warranty?

Still waiting for recall to be addressed, but they suggested it would be done, along with the clutches.

504.00/507.00 is for variable service intervals.

502.00 is perfectly acceptable for 15,000km fixed service intervals on a petrol engine if not driven under "harsh" conditions as listed in the service manual. It's all there in B&W for anyone that cares to read.

As long as it has APPROVED for VW 502/505 and not SUITABLE for VW written on the container it should be OK
Super crap only sell one Castrol approved oil and it is a 502/505 The only 504/507 APPROVED is the PENRITE Enviro+and a Shell Helix Ultra EXTRA 504/507
They also sell a Shell Helix Ultra 502/505

Nulon have SUITABLE but NOT Approved oils

            • I noticed my catch can does not collect more gunk with shell helix ultra extra compared to when i had castrol ll3 / motul specific 504.00.

Perhaps polo gti owners want to experiment with shell helix ultra extra to see if oil use can be reduced?

              • If you read this oil comparo review then you might not want to use Shell Helix Ultra.....didn't do well at all. Penrite did much better. http://www.animegame.com/cars/Oil%20Tests.pdf

Apparently Valvoline also do a VW approved oil - and looking at how well their Durablend performed, might be worth looking at.

Royal Purple kicked ass, but as far as im aware, they dont have a VW approved oil. Motul also performed pretty poorly.....despite their premium cost.

For those with oil usage, try the Penrite Enviro+ 5w-40. My mates MK5 GTi drinks oil likes theres no tomorrow and i used the 5w-40 in it when i did a service about a month ago. Its still using oil, but doesn't appear to be going through it as fast. The 5w-40 is also about $20 cheaper than the 5w-30, and still VW approved.

                  • I've used 3 different oils. The original VW Long Life (Castrol, I am led to believe), Shell Helix Ultra Extra, and Fuchs.

I concur with Nat 225, I lost less oil with the Shell.

But still far too much, as far as I'm concerned...

                      • So, got the result of my latest Oil Consumption Test.

Used 0.8 L per 1000km. Finally, more than the borderline result I had had previously.

I thought the next step would be an engine rebuild, since I already had a hose change, but apparently not...

                        I quote:

"Checked ELSA for next stage of consumption test as per TPI.
Requires crank case ventilation hose and air intake hose.
Have ordered parts and will fit when both clutch and mechatronics are replaced"

Has anybody else had to go through this step?

I don't remember seeing anybody getting these done... Am I wrong?

                          • I add another half liter of oil yesterday and I have 6000 km on it. So 1L for 6000 km...and another 4000 km till oil and filter change. Will see, if any change will appear. My friend and mechanics in one said that the first oil is bit different from the regular Castrol 5W30.

                              • Our MY12.5 Polo GTi has now done 22,000kms and it's used right on about 2L of oil in that time, so less than 100ml per 1000km. I guess we're lucky?
