Just because it's a car, it doesn't mean that the laws are any different.

kevinctr, the oil that is factory fill is 504.00/507.00 spec, not 504.7 which is a different specification all together. Yes, i agree that the Castrol Edge 5W30 that they put in the cars is rubbish and burns off too easily hence why I do not use it. However what you are advocating is that people fill their vehicles with a non approved oil to see if the oil consumption drops. Not a good idea my friend because those people will then have an oil sample taken and then tested if they claim ongoing consumption issues. If they have not drined the non approved oil and done a full flush with approved oil prior to taking the vehicle in, bye bye warranty claim, hello $20,000 for a whole new engine.
I thought that there would be a limit on when you can ask for a refund/ replacment i have had the car for over 8 months now

Suggest you have a look at the ACCC website.

I have a mate with a 12 month old Volvo (spent 14 weeks in the workshop this year) and he is currently negotiating with dealer & VolvoAus for refund/replacement as they still haven't/can't fix the fault with the vehicle.

      • Just for context my Suzuki Swift with 180,000km on the clock does 15,000km between services without burning any oil.
Anyone that says 1L of oil per 1000kms in a modern engine is normal is full of ****.
In fact a car that burns 1L of oil per 1000kms would go very close to failing a road worthy emissions test.

The manufacturer deems 1L per 2000kms acceptable so for a service department to say the contrary, they are lying bas*ards that are more than happy to take your money when it involves them doing as little work as possible.

            Hi Gav

What I am suggesting was to run in the car with a regular synthetic oil (non low saps oil) when you have just got your car. Drain out after 1000km and replace with your regular 504/507 specs oil. I actually meant 504.00/7.00. Which is a 5w30 Low SAPS oil.

            • Breather pipe fitted today and the back of the car is spotless and the chrome on the exhaust is sparkling.

Oil is topped up as well so now I play the waiting game to see if it has been fixed........not holding my breath.

Breather hose was replaced and VW put in a new one/bigger one which will reduce the oil consumption!

Also has the sound aktuator disconnected as it was rattling in low revs so happy about that... Well haven't checked yet as warmin car up at dealership.

Also. The engine turns on differently now...

                      • Just got another top up yesterday. 1L in engine and 1L top up bottle. I am heading overseas soon, so didnt bother complaining about it yet.

Here is the usage so far:
                        Date Engine Oil Distance
                        08/2012 New Car 20km
                        10/2012 1L 1000km
                        31/10/2012 1L top up/1L bottle 2000km
                        17/12/2012 1L top up/1L bottle 3655km

Very disappointing numbers... So 4L topped up for 3655km... not cool at all...

                            • Awesome, I must have the lemon.

Loving the way the car drives, but the oil consumption sux. When I am back from holidays in Feb, I will complain and try and get something done.
