Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • hmmm, its been two weeks since I last checked my oil levels and it has gone from Full (A), down to 1/2 way down the dip stick (B), the letters are from what is stated in the owners manual.

I hope this settles down and is just new car/engine high oil usage and not an ongoing issue.

    GTi is currently on 1000km.

yeah by 2.2k my oil light came on and I took it back to the dealers to get it topped up. Make sure its for free and if they say anything about yeah its normal its a load of bull. I'm still monitoring my oil level and im currently on 3k and he said he topped up 1.4L so hopefully I wont be seeing him soon. I also try to use S mood more and work on the mid-high end revs 3-5 to see if that will help with the engine oil. So far it seems to be a bit better but fingers crossed.

That's ok, only approx 500ml in 1000km is well in spec, especially compared to some other people.

        • I hope so, I am getting a bottle of Castrol EDGE Professional Longlife III 5W-30 today to top it up.

Not a fan of having my oil down 50% of the dip stick....

Saying that I checked the oil when I first got it and it was only 1/2 full to begin with.

              • Possible false alarm. Originally checked the oil this arvo about 5minutes after pulling up. Checked oil again about 20minutes after parking up and its at the halfway mark as it was 1000k's ago.

When is the best time to check the oil levels? Is 20 minutes too long or just right? Oil dipstick handle was still toasty.

                • 20 minutes is perfect, oil has to be hot when you switch off the engine(90°C at least)...

                  • The best way to determine if you indeed have an oil lost problem is to check the oil in the morning. Problem is I noticed, the oil level will varies depending on how long its been shut down after its hot. I always wait for 5-10mins to check and its at full mark. If I wait for only 1min its at 70% mark. Cold engine I am at 115% mark.

                    • Checked mine again this morning cold and its @ 50% which i think it was when I first got it. I might get it topped up and keep more of an eye on things over the next month or so.

                      • My GTI's 2500 km's into its life and its on low (C). nearly at the orange plastic ball. The oil light hasn't come on yet...should I go into the dealer and request for an oil top up?

                        • Yeah mate I would. I went down to the local and bought the right oil today and just let them know the oil is low just so they have a record of it. I put 1 litre in at 1700k's as it was just above the low ball. I'll be keeping a keen eye on it from now on

                          • Not once did I take my car back to the dealership for top ups because I don't think that Castrol oil they use is the goods.

I always topped up with either LiquiMoly or Penrite... maybe 3 or 4 times in the first 7,500km and since the 15,000km service my oil level still has not moved and I now sit on 22,000km.

                            • So went to the dealer last week and they filled it up... hesitantly might I add.

Also did a bit of a test today, my mate driving behind me, noticed when i accelerate, black smoke comes from exhaust. Not like a diesel but there was smoke.

                              • ^ black smoke is unburnt petrol and is completely normal for any car to spit some out of the exhaust when you put your foot down - absolutely nothing to worry about.

The oil is being burnt slowly over hundreds of kilometers - so slowly that you will likely never see it/smell it being burnt.
