My dealer told me that Volkswagen doesn't make anymore brand new engines. They just repair the defective ones which were taken from someone elses car, change the defective part and put a new number. I know this because they fitted a repaired engine into my car and it had low compression in all cylinders (and it was made[Overhauled] in April 2012).

Hopefully it will be better than the new one. Let us know please, if the oil consumption was resolved or not.

it won't happen. I'm not going to accept the car back. I'll arrange a lawyer to take care of that for me and get back the money I spent.

I believe that will be my next course of action if this new engine does not resolve it... how many times do I have to give them to fix exactly the same issue?

Should start talking to them now karly...Give yourself plenty of time to learn and understand the rules. VW will try and beat you in the law game quite quickly.

I am wondering if the lazy gearbox has anything to do with it? The engine is never really worked around town... it just wants to get up to the highest gear possible and just doesn't go through a whole range of revs

This should actually load the engine up MORE than revving it out on part throttle

Sorry but im pretty damn sure that's illegal here in Australia. They take an engine, rebuild it badly then give it a new engine number when that number is already in the system and assigned to a VIN? That's called re-birthing mate. Now, what I know that they do do in new-motor cases is they will get a bare motor (just bottom end, valve train and head) then pull the ancillaries off your existing motor and bolt them to the new one. This is what happens elsewhere around the globe and due to Australia's re-birthing laws, I would be fairly certain that is what happens here. Umai Naa would be good to weigh in here, if he's floating around.

+1 for a new engine. I'd been getting the oil warning every 1200Km. At around the 7000Km mark did an oil consumption test and went through 940ml of oil. Booked to get it replaced in a few weeks. The surprising thing is they informed me that the acceptable amount of oil to be consumed for 1000km is 400ml.

For the record I took it very easy on the engine for the 1st 1000-1500km.

Apparently this is the procedure set out by VW...

MIght be the angle, but it looks like your engine coolant is over filled. VW service overfilled mine and it subsequently overflowed. ENded up with dried white droplets over the engine and a white spray over the underside of the bonnet.

I'd suggest anyone who's had multiple oil consumption 'remedies' (e.g. replaced engines etc) and still no fix, you read this document

To have a free top up or not to have a free top up? I just got mine get a free top up after the check oil light went up, checked the oil level this morning and it looks like they overfilled it, Its above the mark recommended by the manual!!!

Car's done 6400km, I have been topping it up with 400ml/1000km up to the 4000k mark when they asked me to wait till you get the check oil warning and bring it there. check oil warning lit up @6200 km. The apprentice dude from the dealer said he topped it up with 1 litre of oil, I am doubting that now since it seems to have gone past the max level from the dipstick.

gavs, I always wondered whether you haven't had major oil consumption issues because you drive in manual mode all the time, and let the revs get higher than D mode would. Is that the case? Do you drive in Manual all the time?

If so, what kind of fuel consumption do you get, out of curiosity?

Mostly in D with the odd spritz in M a few times a week. I generally average around 7.1L/100kms a tank.
