Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Surely burning that much oil would mean its not passing emissions regulations...
    Good luck.

    • Yerp - I seem to be able to replicate kawabanga's results...

Low revs - mashing the throttle (before kickdown) doing over 60km/h in 7th will chew the oil. Thought it was in my head, I can reproduce this oil usage using this technique.

High revs- keeping the engine spinning seems to avoid using a lot of oil.

      Hrmm...food for thought?

Eddie we need to talk, mine is doing the same thing, driven around slowly on light throttle in high gears or trying to accelerate hard when in a high gear from low speeds, im creating massive smoke plumes, knocking and high oil consumption. If I drive it in manual and keep the revs up, none of the problems are evident.

          • For sure low revs are not good for a supercharged 1.4 gasoline engine or at least not for this TSI...
It has the same torque at same revs of a 1.6TDI, that's crazy...!

Also, D is not good in my opinion: it's programmed to minimize fuel consumption, but engine always run under 2.000rpm and that's not ideal... Using manual and running over 2.500/3.000 fuel consumption will be a little higer (like you found), but engine will be more healty and clean...
I NEVER use D, except when I'm standing at a traffic light to reduce idle...

There are plenty of examples here, one for all:
One guy here in Italy run daily his GTI on city roads: 1liter per 1.000Kms his average, with soot and oil dots on his rear bumper. Sometimes he takes part to some Track-Days in Monza circuit: long runs on long straights with full gas and not a drop of oil used.
IMHO this means that the engine is basically healty, but in certain conditions it eats oil, but not in the way like a worn and faulty engine use to do...

            • Thanks guys. Good to know. I used to cruise a lot at <2000rpm but lately I've been late to work so I've been gunning it a bit more
Interestingly, even though oil was consumed a lot, I never had oil spots. Just black soot.
My car is also to subject to "harsh driving conditions" as well, as daily trips to and from work takes less than 15mins and is in surburban traffic. Usually the engine oil will have only hit 60-70c when I arrive.

              • So it seems you have to choose between high oil consumption (low revs) or high fuel consumption (high revs).

                Interesting design philosophy, lol.

Yep - completely agree with you here. During my oil consumption test I drove the car harder and in M most of the time and consumption went down and soot on the back was less.

                  • [SERIOUS MODE OFF]: Ok guys, so you down there in Australia should not ask for a refund to VW but just a exception to speed limit.
"All TSI Twincharge engine are allowed to floor the foot at least one time per day and are also allowed to pass slow drivers everywhere just to mantain oil consumption at an acceptable limit"

[SERIOUS MODE ON]: what a bug from VW...!!

Hopefully keeping the revs up will help us

Pardon my ignorance, but what are the potential long term issues that may arise due to extended high oil consumption?

_"Glued" piston rings and consequent increase of oil consumption
_Deposits in the combustion chambers and valve seats: reduction of performances
_Short life of spark-plugs, catalyst and exhaust gas sensors...

                          • Right, so after my car going 9000km before needing an oil top up (got car at 18000km, oil needed at 27,000km), I went away overseas for two weeks and came back yesterday to find it was asking for more oil (29,000km). Filled up a whole litre. Anyone know why this should happen?

                            • I totally concur with the findings of some of the members regarding low rev oil consumption issues. It's actually good news I think with regards to the oil consumption issues this motor has been subject to worldwide because the reason behind the consumption has finally surfaced. I have a CTH and during the course of ownership and my driving style ( mostly in M, higher revs 2.5k - 4.5k) consumption has been around 1L/10000 km. I've been away the last 3 weeks so the wife has treated herself to the car and I know she drives in D and very sedately. Well guess what oil is down about 300 ml for about 800km.

                              • I finally got off my ass and checked the oil level yesterday for the first time. Just shy of 8,000 km on it and no light had come on so I was thinking it must be all good. I really should have checked sooner. There wasn't even oil on the ball at the end of the stick. I topped it up with almost 3L of oil today so the light must have been close to coming on. Not as bad as a lot of people on here but I'm not impressed either.
