Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Yep, pretty much same as mine at 21k!

Pretty smart too to be using genuine VW parts. They won't throw a tantrum if you've used the same parts as they would for a standard service.

I don't think you take an oil sample buy capturing a sample mid-stream (it isn't a urine analysis).

At a minimum you have to use the oil sample companies containers or you have too much potential for introducing other contaminants.

FWIW, we use oilcheck / inspec for hydraulic oil analysis. We have a brass extraction attachment & the sample bottle screws straight onto it. We feed a sample line into the oil reservoir via the filler cap IIRC (I don't do the job, I just write the job plan & schedule it).

Thanks brad to many urine tests lately

I've been told by my service adviser that VW Aust are waiting till the vehicle reaches 12mths or 15,000km before attempting the consumption test.
I wonder if you can claim back the oil purchases since they have delayed the consumption test and pretty much forced you to buy the oil to keep the engine from starving in the meantime.

            • Thought I would stoke the fire a bit.

Partner's MY13 Polo GTI CTHE needed an oil top up yesterday after the light came on at 3000kms. Couldnt get onto VW at the time so filled out of my own pocket. Called VW (where we bought it from) this morning informed the lady at the service desk. She was shocked to hear it had burnt that much and wanted us to bring it in. I asked to speak to a mechanic or a foreman. She went off and had a chat, and he wants me to bring it in for a supposed fix. I enquired what this fix was, but the foreman just left so she couldnt ask, but apparently it was not changing any parts.

I also enquired whether, in future, I was able to come down for a free top up this early on, and she seemed surprised that I asked. How did you guys get VW to top your oil up free of charge?

With regards to the "fix", everything on the car is perfect. After hearing stories on here about the driveability suffering after an update or whatever I am hesitant to hand it over.

I also got fed the "run in oil" story. Is this honestly a load of crap? Is there any difference in viscosity between their oil, and ones we buy off the shelf?

Would be nice to think they would, considering it cost me $75-80 for 5L but I dont hold any hope of this happening.

                • Well i went with a Schedule 2 oil analysis that checks for the following:
                  Moisture Content
                  Wear Metals
                  Contamination Metals
                  Additive Metals
                  Fuel Dilution
                  Oxidation and Nitration Values
                  Total Base Number
                  TGA Soot
                  Viscosity @ 100°C

Just out of curiosity, car has done 21500kms, oil is 6.5k kms old.
Will be interesting to see the results, will post them up when i have them on hand.
