Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Managed to get to just over 300 miles (483km) in just under a month. Nearly half way!

    • Hello. I did the mod with the oil jets and i dont know if it is me or not but i think the fuel consumption is a little bit higher. All of you that you did the oil jets mod have you noticed any increase in the fuel consumption?

      • Mine has certainly crept up over the years, but I couldn't pin it to a particular service.

        • Well... Got the oil squirters done about 4 months ago. Oil level didn't move till I went for a long drive ... Check before the trip was full, came back, it was almost at the bottom level. Only about 600ks of driving. So it's back in for testing.... And the creaky door are starting to annoy me...

          • Strangely enough, I drove to Hervey Bay from Logan City about a week ago and my oil level dropped about 200ml in the 330kms it took to get there. I topped it up and it didn't drop any coming home. It hadn't had a good highway run since the oil jets were done about 5000kms ago. I assume it was just burning the garbage out of the oil.

                • Finally had the breather pipe and oil jets done under warranty. I took the car in at 510 miles instead of the 621 (1000km) as i was getting worried about the car and the way it was behaving. Level was near bottom.

Hopefully it will sort the issue but only time can tell. In total the work was £523 at the local VW dealer.

                  • My oil level went from full to min in just 1100km. Can someone tell me how many litres is that?

                    • test it empirically, put 500ml in and see where it takes it, then add from there. I have been told its 750, but also 1L.

                        • If you too are still having problems with oil consumption, read this.

At 75000 km, I decided to try an experiment and drive only in manual mode.

Perhaps not surprisingly, given Gav's experience, my oil consumption dropped. I've gone through more tanks of fuel without having to top up than ever before.

But what I can't understand, is that my fuel consumption IMPROVED! So much for my justification for NOT driving in manual. I really don't get it, but there it is. Anybody else want to try the experiment?

Yes, thanks. I think the oil consumption improving was pretty well established, especially in low mileage cars.

I just thought it was interesting that it would still make a difference in a car with as much mileage as mine.

Also, I don't understand how driving in manual can improve my fuel mileage when my shift points are so different to the auto shift points that presumably are in place to maximise fuel economy. Which is what I prioritise.

So I am just saying, that if you've hesitated to use Manual all the time because you're convinced - like I was - that your fuel economy will suffer, maybe give it a try and see?

(That being said, I am basing my results on what the MFD figures are. Haven't verified them independently.)

                              • The shift points are higher in the rev range so theoretically you will automatically think you will use more fuel, however you're not loading up the engine as much to push up the revs, to do that the engine pumps in more fuel. So while your revs are higher, you need less throttle input to have/generate the same momentum in manual mode.

                                Example:
You're driving along at 60kph in 7th and want to accelerate up to 100. Think about how much throttle you have to apply and for how long to get there in D because the engine won't kick down unless you really mash the throttle. Now the same thing in 4th gear, the car does it easily with far less throttle. So while the engine is pumping in fuel more often with the increased revs, the actual volume of fuel going in is far less because everything is less, boost is less, strain is less.... Look at when top gear tested the Prius against the m3 I think it was, similar theory....
