Proven many times around the world with this twincharge engine - ill try to find one specific local example by a well regarded VW custom tuner in Sydney who couldn't believe his eyes when he saw how poor the standard tune was on these cars. It was running so lean (not enough fuel which equals excessive heat and high chance of detonation/pinging).

Getting it remapped will do wonders for the longevity of the engine....and be much more fun to drive.
    Sounds interesting.

How would you know if the car is doing detonation/pinging? I have noticed that when I start the car for the first time the next day it vibrates a bit, feels like the engine is shaking or is something is stuck for a few seconds. Could that be the same thing? (If my description makes sence )

    • sounds like a rattling noise. like a chain being pulled across a metal bar.

If you have the windows up you won't hear it

      • We got our MY13 back after doing the oil test, typically it had only used 300ml! Not the 700ml+ before the test.
Looks like I'll be checking it for the next 1,000km to see what happens.

As brad said, its often described as a "can of marbles rattling" sound. Heres a video to help: https://youtu.be/JA0cH_vRABg

Or you could stand on the side of the road and listen to just about every Rav4 or Camry from around 2005 with a 4 cyl engine.......they all ping.

It honestly wouldn't surprise me if VW used a different oil (thicker or somehow different) when they do these oil consumption tests.

From what I could tell, the day they started the test the oil level was well over the top mark on the dip stick, when it came back after the test was completed and checked it was just on the top of the mark.
              Maybe I'm being paranoid!

Overfilling the engine with oil is another way to "mask" oil consumption. Wouldn't surprise me one bit.

                • Long time since I last posted but here goes.

I had my engine replaced on my MY12.5 Polo approximately 12 months ago, and all of a sudden oil consumption has become an issue again. Had the 4 year service in Feb, and it appears to have drunk around 3L of oil between then and now. This car is now 4yrs and 6 months old and i've told VW Customer Care after 20 visits to the dealership, a new engine, a new gearbox and now the possibility of needing another new engine, they can have the car back.

While i've enjoyed the car when it works, the amount of time when it doesnt work, or has issues (such as, since the gearbox replacement, changing out of P to Drive, Reverse takes upto 15 seconds to engage.....) has now overtaken the fun.

Hopefully VW come to the table and offer me some kind of replacement or buyback as enough is enough.

Sorry to hear that. They should be offering you one of the newer 1.8T GTI models for all the trouble it has caused.

                      Quick update,
Since the test was done the car has been driven for 1200k's and the dipstick is dry when checking the oil level. So much for the consumption test!

The car is now booked in to Wakelings Campbelltown to get the modified oil injectors fitted, I bought the Amarok and father in laws golf from them last year and was impressed by the quality of service given, long story short I asked the general manager to look into the problem and he came back today with the news that the service dept had found that the car Needs the oil injectors done. They have ordered the parts and I've to take the car in and leave it with them for a couple of days, once the parts arrive. I'll even get a loan car.

If you want looked after I can highly recommend them.

                        • Picked the car up yesterday after leaving it with them for a few days, so that the sealant could cure fully on the sump.
it feels like a different car now, engine is smoother and sounds great. Had the 30,000 service done as well as it was due.
Received the car back in tip top condition, cleaned inside and out. The service from Wakelings is faultless!

                            • I thought my Mk6 Golf R used a lot of oil. Topped the oil up in both mine and the missus' car 2 weeks ago. Mine barely moved, but her Polo GTi required a 700ml topup yesterday. This time would equate to around 800kms. Going to re-check the oil level tonight and reset the trip computer and see how it goes over the next 1000kms. Won't be an exact science as I am not draining the oil.

Checked it tonight and the level is about 2mm from the top mark on the dipstick. Has done 1254k's since the work was done ✅ unfortunately I didn't check the level when we picked it up.
The tail gate is also clear of black deposits.
