Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

I have the optional heated alcantara seats and the first time it went back for maintenance was because of the excessive and unbearable squeeking noise on the drivers side, which they determined were the mounting brackets – so they got replaced – but the actual problem is inside the seat, most likely the springs. So please just replace the whole seat.

Oh..and the rattle behind the dash which we all know is the fuel line issue is still there because after 2 attempts at getting it fixed they tried to tell me its the DSG and that is normal operation... WTF!!! I gave up after that!

Now, after getting the 15K service done last Thursday I'm now getting the bleeping RED engine light shouting at me.

      I'm getting a new engine!
After 2nd oil consumption test they agree that it is burning too much oil.

Yet to travel 30,000 kms and I'm getting a new engine. Kind of makes me wonder about the car's long term viability. Methinks I'll be selling it once it comes off the lease....

I got a new one with under 13000kms. Connecting rods were worn out and led to scored cylinder walls (Cylinder 1 and 4)

        • So how many new engines now in this thread??? Has anyone done any mileage on theirs yet? I'm only 500km in but so far so good oil consumption wise *touch wood*

          • My car is still being repaired. Yesterday they had fitted the new engine and were fitting the front bumper, headlights, etc. They said probably it will be ready today, but they must test it for 50kms before delivery (VW demand)

            • UPDATE: After fitting the new engine and new injectors the car was still causing misfires (they used the old spark plugs and coil packs on the new engine). Yesterday they told me he would change the plugs and coil pack for new ones and then take it for a test run to check for faults. Got a call 10min ago telling me the car is still causing random misfires (sometimes @ cylinder 1 sometimes @ 2, etc)...

He is going to change the ECU for a new one and call a VW engineer to check the car...

I'm speechless right now, I just hope they can't fix it and return the money I spent!!!

I have this squeeking inside the seat as well. I inquired at my 15K service and they said they cleaned and lubricated the rails... I'll have to bring it up again when I take it back for some replacement parts they had to order in.

I also told them about the dash rattle and what was causing it (after reading here) but they said they tested and could not find it. I must admit though that since the DSG software update, I haven't heard it either. It is far more reluctant to drop down gears now when under load (which is when I was hearing the rattle - in too high a gear and low revs on inclines).

                • So my car isn't a Polo but a Golf 118tsi and just over 30,000kms on the clock. In the same boat as many on here I think, consumption test every 1000kms (after having the oil light come on 5000kms after my last service). Never had issues with oil consumption prior... From reading this sounds like a new engine is the likely outcome :/ I guess that has pros and cons.

Query: If you get a new engine, do you get a new warranty on it?

To answer this, I'm about to tick over 23000kms and no issues with mine whatsoever. I have only topped up the engine oil to the tune of 2 litres in that period of time.

Injectors won't stop the missfire, that will be coilpacks and/or spark plugs, that's a pretty simple one that. There could possibly be a dodgy earth on the motor somewhere as there is a massive amount of current generated through the coilpacks. I would just wait for the outcome of what the engineer has to say.

Check with your dealership but generally there is a warranty period on the replacement parts that get fitted to the car. If it's the whole motor than I would assume that there would be a warranty on it.

                    • Ok at 4100kms the oil light has come on and this is my 2nd gti. 1st gti was fairly low at 5k Kms as that's when I did an oil change but I will be changing the oil tommorrow 900kms earlier.

                      • I had my second top up (1 litre) from the dealer at 9000km last week so my car is chewing up around a litre every 4500km.

Well within their speciifed oil consumption limits but would have preferred it to have reduced somewhat (well it sorta did as the first top up at 4400km was 1.2 litres).

Based on this, I'll most likely require another top up just before her first service @ 15000km.

                        • Free top ups?

I just got 1 free top up which was 500ml in the first 800kms. After that I had to buy 4lts of Castrol to top up myself

                          • In the most famous Italian car magazine (Quattroruote), after a lot of reports sent to them by the users of our forum (polovw.it) and others, came out a two pages article that starts like this: "Once upon a time the use was to have a jar of oil in the car trunk, no more in 2012, except for Vw..."

VW was inquired by the magazine about the oil problem on TSI engines and stated that:
_From engine #CAV261914 is not useful to change piston rings, because this is a temporary solution and those rings are already mounted in origin on these engines, so will not give a definitive benefit. It's better to wait for a new oil separation system that is going to come and will be mounted for free on all faulty cars.
_Top ups will be done for free in all VW workshops...

                              • Do you mean ETKA number?
Not yet, the article just appeared on June's number of the magazine... Non more details...
Let's wait, we also know that all Italian workshop managers went in May to VW Italy headquarters for a meeting about this problem and they were said that a solution is going to come...

I'm not so confident about this solution, but let's see what will happen... :/
