  • Pleasant surprise today. Oil consumption test came back borderline... Again.
Nevertheless, service department went to bat for me and got the oil squirter replacement approved... Even though my car is technically out of warranty!
I must say, I have been impressed with my dealers service department over the years. Pricey, but they do look after their customer's interest. That's makes it worth it.

    • Mine consumed 700ml /1000km using castrol yet less using shell helix. Luckily the consumption test was done when I had castrol in it. Car also backfires and rough start from cold.
Had oil squirters changed. Improvement to 250ml roughly.
Complained to vwa, but not interested. Meanwhile I've talked about five people out of buying a vw and I'll continue to do so. I understand there are always manufacturing faults and defects, but it's how the company deals with it. Which in this case, is not at all.

      • Had my squirters installed on the 10th Feb. Oil has not dropped below the top of the hatch marks since. Estimate I've done between 3000-3500 kms. Happy so far.

        • So 2800 km since oil squirters were replaced. Oil is now down to the bottom 3rd of the dipstick. Not great but heaps better than before.

          • How many miles was it before the squirters?

I have a 2011 with 25k miles on the clock and i topped up around 370 miles ago and it is already down to half which has me worried.

            • My usage was always very borderline, with respect to what VW considers within spec, about 500ml per 1000 km.
Looks like I will still need to top up between services, but much less frequently.

              • It looks like it has made some improvement then.

I am going to give VW a call and ask them what is the best course of action as I have only had the car just over 2 months so really don't want a new engine. Going to see how much the new oil spray jets are to supply and fit without going through the whole back and forth procedure.

Update: Well, I gave VW a call and spoke to a "service advisor" and all he could say was bring it in for checks. He wouldn't discuss what would be done if there was a problem or if he knew of the breather mod and the updated oil jets..........looks like I have a long road ahead

                • Is your car the current model? Should all be covered by warranty, then. But yes, before they do any work, they will want to confirm that the car is out of spec, by doing an oil consumption test. Hopefully you can get all the components replaced in one go.

But this is the first time I've heard of a current model having oil consumption issues...

Sorry for the confusion, mine is a 2011 model with the CAVE engine. It is out of warranty by half a year but when I bought the car I got a 3 year extended one

                    • Ah! Same year as mine then. Mine was out of warranty when they did the latest work (goodwill) , but it has had a 4 year history of using oil.

If you have an extended warranty, should be no problem.

I am hoping that they will do a goodwill gesture if anything is found but I won't get my hopes up. I asked if they had any history on their system about the vehicle and they didn't say anything was logged so I am guessing that the previous owner didn't raise the issue.

                        Is yours still going ok?

                        Update:

                        After at 26582 today (20/05):

                        • That would be about 250-300ml down from where it was.

                          • Yep, 250-300 ml over 380 MILES. Is that right? Miles, not km? So close to 400km... Similar to mine. I used to top up with about 250 ml at every petrol fill, once it dropped down to half the dipstick..

                            • Bear in mind that dealers do not share service info with eachother, not even to VWA. If you buy a used car and want its history you have to ask for printouts from the dealer who did the work... and they may not give the info to you, citing data protection. Also bear in mind that its not like oil consumption tests are recorded anywhere other than on the dealers system and VWA will/can not tell you what warranty work they have lodged about the car.

I should add the TLA 'IME' at this point as I'm sure someone will advise that I'm wrong and they got info from a dealer and VWA, but Ive been down this route and been denied info at both sources. VWA even asked me to provide scans of my own copies of dealer service sheets as they said the dealer does not send the info on what work is asked for, or completed, to VWA.

I worked out its about 420 miles since topping up. What im gonna do is keep driving as normal and buy a litre of oil to put in the boot. When the light comes on i will see its true useage.

Is it worth doing a check after its hot?
