counting down the days till mine gets looked at... oil consumption still increasing just topped up another 400ml in 400km.... after a drive you can now smell the aroma of burning oil. So frustrating and disappointing...
i've recently noticed the smell of burning oil with mine as well...
2012 Volkswagen Polo GTI (Shadow Blue) | Current Upgrades - APR Stage 2 Tune | GFB DV+ | HP Cold Air Intake | OKADA Plasma Direct Coil Packs | HP Exhaust | HP DQ200 Tune | Whiteline Rear Sway Bar | Uprated Engine Mounts Planned Upgrades - | Coil Overs | HP Intercooler |
I haven't been able to speak to the dealer today but they had my polo all day today and have left a message on my phone to say they believe the turbocharger is faulty. I'm guessing I will be getting a new one - if the seals are faulty and allowing all that oil through I would imagine the oil consumption should stop immediately with the new part?
If that's the cause then yes. Don't know how a turbo can possibly chew that much oil without other signs though. Dav had his turbo replaced due to boost related issues.
MY12.5 Polo GTI - 3000km - Check oil light... Almost empty...
If this oil consumption problem is well known why does VW Insist that car only need a oil change at 15,000 km seems to need topping up every few hundred km but to use 4.6 liters total capacity of engine in under 3000 km is ridicuolous .

Additive pack is renewed every time you top up. In some ways, those with oil burners have better engine protection than those whose engines have sealed up.
carandimage The place where Off-Topic is On-Topic I used to think I was anal-retentive until I started getting involved in car forums

Yeah that's why I'm feeling a bit skeptical...I also took it back before the oil consumption was this high and complained (tail gate was still covered in black soot and blowing smoke) and they told me they hooked it up and checked and everything was fine. I do hope it is something this simple but I really am not feeling much faith in this engine.
These cars are running rich direct from the factory in order to protect the longevity of the engine , but some cars using this amount of oil is not right , heck my 13 B REW Twin turbo rotary engine that is renowned for high oil usage does not use anywhere as much oil as some of the Polo GTIs

To what end?
I don't see any benefit over the engine that sealed up. That's why those that use more oil get repaired under the warranty.
In Spain appeared this article, Autobild interviewed VAG group and they said the cause of faulty 1.4 TSI is the distribution chain: oil pressure is too high in the first moments during cold start...
How can it be?
Why VW continues to change piston rings or whole engines...??

At the end of the article it also says that VW will recall the affected motors...it must be in neverneverland because to date i still have to hear about VW recalling any. If it isnt for the owners themselves complaining they would sit quietly going about selling these cars in the thousands and not be bothered about customer satisfaction.
And if it is transmission chain why they changing piston and rings instead of adressing that...too many Chiefs and not enough Indians and obviously nobody wants to own up for the cockup in the design.
Well it appears I am now getting a new engine?? Very strange that they happened to have one handy ... I am getting one now and another customer has been pushed back apparently. So stay tuned!
I guess that the Spanish article is not accurate...
Lookin for it on the web I found this one from Autobild TSI-Motorschden: Bietet VW bald mehr Kulanz? - autobild.de
If the Spanish are referring to this one, actually no mention is done about oil pressure and the problem may affect all the TSI, not only the 180hp and only after a certain milleage...
the only reference to our problem could be the release in the oil of abrasive particles: this could damage pistons and cylinders before the filter action...

I also know of a case where the engine is getting replaced all together.
